Yes—but only in part. Ed Gein was one influence on Leatherface’s macabre look, especially the mask and the bone-and-skin furnishings, but The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is not Gein’s story. Director Tobe Hooper recalled other sources for the mask imagery, and actor Gunnar Hansen said the film’s plot was made up.
What did Ed Gein influence?
The Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin describes Tobe Hooper and co-writer Kim Henkel’s script as “loosely inspired” by Ed Gein, the Wisconsin grave robber and murderer. That wording supports a real connection, but not a claim that Leatherface is a direct portrait of Gein or that the film retells his crimes. The archive also records “Leatherface” as an early working title for the movie, which was ultimately released as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Harry Ransom Center finding aid).
Actor Gunnar Hansen, who played Leatherface, later recalled Hooper and Henkel telling him Gein inspired the character’s mask and the bone-and-skin furniture. Hansen also rejected the idea that the movie was Gein’s story, saying “the story was entirely made up” (Family Home Theater interview).
What did Tobe Hooper say about the mask?
A childhood story from Wisconsin
In a later interview, Hooper recalled that relatives visiting from Wisconsin told his family about a man who dug up graves and used bones and skin. Hooper said he was about four or five at the time and that the relatives “didn’t mention his name.” He remembered the story as a childhood bogeyman, rather than as a detailed account of Gein’s crimes (The Flashback Files interview).

A family doctor’s Halloween story
Hooper separately recalled a family doctor telling him that, as a medical student, he had skinned a cadaver’s face, cured and dried it, and worn it to a Halloween party. Asked whether the doctor could be thanked for Leatherface, Hooper answered, “Yes, you can.” This is Hooper’s recollection of the doctor’s story and its effect on him; it is not independent confirmation of what the doctor did.
Was the movie based on Gein’s crimes?
No. Gein is part of the film’s inspiration, but the characters and events are fictional. The Texas State Historical Association describes a broader mix of influences, including the crimes of Dean Corll, Elmer Wayne Henley, and David Owen Brooks, the fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel,” and George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. It also connects the movie’s realistic tone to Hooper’s documentary background and sensational local television news (Handbook of Texas).

The distinction matters: Gein was a real Wisconsin criminal; Leatherface belongs to a fictional Texas story. Hooper’s recollections and Hansen’s account help explain some of the imagery, but they do not establish a one-to-one model for the character, a factual plot, or a measurable share of Gein’s influence.
Where did the chainsaw idea come from?
The chainsaw had a separate origin from Gein’s influence on Leatherface’s appearance. The Texas State Historical Association says Hooper recalled that in December 1972, while shopping in a crowded Austin Montgomery Ward, he saw chainsaws in the hardware department and imagined using one to clear the crowd. The anecdote is about the weapon and its cinematic use, not the source of the mask or bone-and-skin furnishings.

Why do some viewers think it really happened?
The film’s grim, documentary-like presentation can make its fiction feel like reportage, but its realistic style is not evidence that the events occurred. In an October 31, 2024 anniversary segment, Austin PBS put the point plainly: “But just to be clear, it was not real” (Austin PBS / PBS anniversary segment).
