Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart and Seth Meyers all joked about the remarks. Palmer’s daughter, Peg Palmer Wears, said she was not really upset but called the approach a poor way to remember her father.
What Trump said about Arnold Palmer
Trump spoke at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Latrobe, Palmer’s birthplace, during a campaign rally on October 19, 2024. The primary-source transcript shows him first recounting Palmer’s childhood and development as a golfer: Trump described Palmer’s father working at the Latrobe course, Palmer’s early access to clubs, and his progress through school and college golf. That childhood narrative is Trump’s recollection of what Palmer supposedly told him, not an independently verified account of Palmer’s biography. The story then shifted to Palmer’s physique. Trump said that professional golfers who showered with Palmer reacted, “Oh my God. That’s unbelievable,” and added: “Arnold Palmer was all man, and I say that in all due respect to women.” The shower anecdote—not simply the tribute to Palmer’s golf career—became the passage late-night hosts seized on.
Why the tribute drew attention
The rally took place in the closing weeks of the 2024 presidential campaign, with Election Day less than two weeks away. The Associated Press reported that Trump spent 12 full minutes at the beginning of the speech saluting Palmer. How late-night hosts joked about the story
A LateNighter roundup published October 22, 2024, identified jokes by Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart and Seth Meyers. The hosts drew on Palmer’s signature drink, golf language and the gap between campaign issues and the viral attention paid to Trump’s anecdote. What Palmer’s daughter said
Peg Palmer Wears told the Associated Press on October 20 that she was “not really upset.” She also said, “I think it was a poor choice of approaches to remembering my father, but what are you going to do?” AP reported that her father’s connection to Trump was primarily an interest in golf and a love of the game. Arnold Palmer’s place in the story
Palmer was born in Latrobe in 1929, learned golf from his father and died in 2016 at age 87, according to the Associated Press. Those biographical details provide context for why Trump made him the subject of a hometown tribute. They are distinct from the childhood details in Trump’s rally retelling, which the transcript attributes to Trump’s own account. AP’s account of Palmer and the rally.
