Trump criticized the host in an interview a week later, revived the dispute in an April post, and returned to it again in September 2025. The timeline began when Trump posted a negative review of Kimmel’s hosting during the ceremony—and Kimmel read it aloud.
What happened at the 2024 Oscars?
On March 10, 2024, shortly before the Best Picture award at the 96th Academy Awards, Trump posted a negative review of Kimmel’s hosting on Truth Social. Kimmel read Trump’s post onstage, then replied: “Well, thank you President Trump. Thank you for watching, I’m surprised you’re still up. Isn’t it past your jail-time?” The audience cheered, according to The Guardian, which reported that Trump’s post appeared at 9:39 p.m. ET.

The punchline was a pointed callback to Trump’s criminal cases, not a comment about the awards themselves. The exchange also had a clear immediate trigger: Trump had publicly criticized Kimmel’s performance while the ceremony was still underway.
What did Trump say about Kimmel a week later?
In a Fox News MediaBuzz interview reported on March 17, 2024, Trump said, “His ratings are terrible. He’s not a talented guy.” He also said he had not expected Kimmel to mention him and complained that Kimmel should have kept quiet. TheWrap reported the interview one week after the Oscars.

Those comments were Trump’s assessment of Kimmel, not independently established facts about the host’s ratings or talent. Kimmel addressed the interview on his show the following day, saying, “I love that this bothered him so much,” as reported by The Guardian.
Why did Kimmel say Trump was still talking about the joke?
On April 17, Trump posted a longer attack that revisited Kimmel’s Oscars hosting and the Best Picture announcement. Kimmel responded on his show the next day, pointing out the time that had passed: “The only person still talking about this joke is him,” he said, according to The Guardian.
Kimmel described Trump’s post as 165 words; that figure is Kimmel’s characterization, not an independently verified count in the report. He also said Oscars ratings were up 4%, which should likewise be understood as Kimmel’s claim rather than an independently verified statistic in the cited coverage.

Yes. In a Truth Social post dated September 18, 2025, Trump again criticized Kimmel’s response at the Oscars. Trump said Kimmel had responded just before the Best Picture announcement and called him one of the worst hosts in Academy Awards history. The available copy is an archive of Trump’s own post, so those statements reflect his account and opinion rather than independent verification: Trump post archive.

Is the 2026 Melania Trump controversy the same incident?
No. In April 2026, Trump and Melania Trump called for ABC to fire Kimmel after a separate “expectant widow” joke in a mock White House Correspondents’ Association dinner routine, according to the Associated Press. That dispute involved a different joke and setting; it was not the 2024 Oscars exchange.
