Donald Sutherland, the Canadian actor whose work ranged from the detective thriller Klute to the family drama Ordinary People and the Hunger Games films, died in Miami on June 20, 2024. He was 88. His son Kiefer Sutherland confirmed his death; the Creative Artists Agency said he had been ill for a long time, according to ITV News.
A career that kept changing shape
Sutherland worked in film for more than half a century. The range of parts named in the Associated Press obituary captures how difficult it is to reduce his career to a single type: he moved from the military satire M*A*S*H* to Klute and Ordinary People, then reached a new generation of viewers as President Snow in The Hunger Games films. The Associated Press obituary describes a career of more than 50 years; the British Film Institute obituary traces his rise as a leading man in the 1970s and his later work in character roles and cameos.

The roles behind the headline
Klute (1971)
In Alan J. Pakula’s thriller, Sutherland played John Klute, a detective investigating a disappearance. The film’s title character is measured and observant, a contrast to the more volatile world around him. The BFI identifies the role as one of the performances that helped define his 1970s leading-man period.
Ordinary People (1980)
In Robert Redford’s family drama, Sutherland played a father grieving the loss of one son while trying to reach the son who survived. The role called for restraint rather than grand gestures, showing another side of the actor’s screen presence.
#1 Best Overall
Ordinary People received major awards recognition, but Sutherland was not nominated for a competitive Academy Award for his performance. The BFI notes that he later received the Academy Honorary Award in 2017; that was a distinct honor, not an acting Oscar.
Recognition beyond the best-known films
Sutherland won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his performance in the television film Citizen X, and another Golden Globe for Path to War, according to the BFI. The Television Academy’s biography and awards record lists his 1995 Emmy win for Citizen X, along with two nominations, including one for Human Trafficking in 2006.

How his family announced his death
Kiefer Sutherland confirmed his father’s death in a public statement reproduced by ITV: “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
