Donald Trump mentioned Cristiano Ronaldo while speaking to Lionel Messi at a White House ceremony on March 5, 2026, honoring Inter Miami’s 2025 Major League Soccer Cup title. Trump said his son Barron was a football fan and a Messi fan, then added that “a man called Ronaldo” had also been great. Messi did not speak during the ceremony, according to the Associated Press.
What did Trump say about Ronaldo to Messi?
Trump connected the Ronaldo reference to his son’s interest in football. EL PAÍS printed Trump’s words in Spanish: “Es un gran fan del fútbol, pero es un gran fan tuyo. Y un caballero llamado Ronaldo, que tenemos, también fue genial”. In English, the remark means that Barron was a big football fan and a big fan of Messi, and that a man called Ronaldo had also been great. This is a translation of the Spanish wording reported by EL PAÍS, not an English-language transcript.
The comment was a brief aside during Trump’s remarks. It was not a reported conversation between Messi and Ronaldo, and Ronaldo was not at the ceremony.
Where and when did the remark happen?
Trump made the remark on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at the White House. The ceremony honored Inter Miami for winning the 2025 MLS Cup. The Associated Press reported that Messi presented Trump with a pink soccer ball during the event and that Trump praised Messi and his decision to play for Miami, also comparing him with Pelé.
