During Donald Trump’s August 12, 2024 conversation with Elon Musk on X, some news coverage said Trump appeared to have a lisp at times. The Trump campaign disputed that description. The available reporting does not establish why Trump sounded as he did or show that he had a health condition.
What happened during the X conversation
Trump and Musk spoke on X on August 12, 2024. Roll Call’s Factbase transcript identifies the event as an interview and dates it that day: read the transcript.
The Guardian reported that Trump “at times appeared to have a lisp.” Inside Edition also described him as appearing to have a lisp in its August 13 report, which noted technical issues with the livestream and described the conversation as lasting two hours. Those are descriptions of how the speech sounded to the outlets, not clinical findings.
How the campaign responded
The Daily Beast reported that a Trump campaign spokesperson rejected the lisp characterization. Its headline quoted the response: “Don’t Believe Your Ears, He Didn’t Lisp Through Elon Musk Interview.” That is the campaign’s position; it does not independently verify the audio or establish a medical explanation.

Do the reports establish a health problem?
No. The sources reviewed do not include a clinical examination, diagnosis, or attributable medical assessment explaining the perceived speech difference. They do not establish that Trump had a speech disorder, stroke, neurological event, intoxication, or another health condition. A viewer’s impression of an interview is not enough to make such a diagnosis.
Inside Edition’s report mentioned livestream technical issues, but the available account does not show that those issues caused the impression. Nor does the reporting establish whether the perceived difference was present in the original audio. The evidence here concerns a specific event in August 2024 and does not establish anything about Trump’s current health.
