What happened on Howard Stern’s show?
On May 6, 2008, The Howard Stern Show aired a segment using edited recordings of Parton speaking in an audiobook. Contemporary reports described the audio as manipulated to create offensive sound bites. The AP report carried by 6abc said the edited clips made it appear that Parton had said rude things about Kenny Rogers, Linda Ronstadt, Burt Reynolds and Johnny Carson. Fox News reported Parton’s objection, and 6abc carried the AP account of the segment.
The distinction matters: the remarks in the segment were not verified statements Parton had made. In her response, she said she had not made the vulgar comments, apologized to anyone offended by them, and said she had nothing to do with the material. The reports identify the source only as one of her audiobooks; they do not establish which audiobook was used.
Why did Parton say she might sue?
Parton said the edited audio had deeply upset her. Fox News reproduced her statement: “I have never been so shocked, hurt and humiliated in all my life.” She also said, “If there was ever going to be a lawsuit, it’s going to be over this.” These were reported statements about the possibility of legal action, not confirmation that a case had been filed.

How did Howard Stern respond?
In a response reported May 22, Stern defended the segment as parody and called it funny. The Boot quoted him on the prospect of legal action: “I can’t even imagine someone thinking they have an actionable case, but bring it on,” he said. The Boot’s account also said it had not been confirmed whether Parton would pursue legal options.
Was there a lawsuit or a final legal outcome?
The contemporaneous accounts cited here do not establish that Parton filed a lawsuit, nor do they provide a final legal outcome. Her statement raised the possibility of a suit, while Stern challenged that prospect; those remarks alone do not show that litigation followed.
