Doctor Who “Wish World” Review: The Last of the Time Lords (Redux)

“Wish World” echoes “The Sound of Drums” and “Last of the Time Lords,” but centers its finale setup on the Doctor’s false family, the Rani and a fall into the Underverse.

“Wish World” is a knowingly theatrical first half of the Doctor Who Season 2 finale: Conrad’s manufactured reality turns Britain into a repressive bureaucracy, while the Doctor struggles to remember who he is. The resemblance to “The Sound of Drums” and “Last of the Time Lords” is hard to miss, but this is less a simple remake than a mythology-heavy setup whose emotional stakes rest on the Doctor, Belinda and their imagined daughter, Poppy.

Spoiler warning: The review below discusses the episode’s major reveals and cliffhanger.

What happens in “Wish World”?

In the seventh episode of Doctor Who Season 2, which aired on 24 May 2025, the Doctor and Belinda wake in an altered domestic life as John and Belinda Smith, with an infant daughter named Poppy. The world is Conrad’s construction: he rules a manufactured Britain and broadcasts fictional Doctor Who adventures.

John works for the Unified National Insurance Team, a bureaucratic, low-tech institution. Ruby sees through the facade, but her doubts get her rejected. She joins Shirley Bingham and other people cast out by the system, forming a resistance. As May 24 approaches, a message from Rogue sharpens John’s unease.

Mrs Flood arrests John and Belinda and takes them to the Rani’s Bone Palace. The Rani presses the Doctor to remember his real identity. As doubt fractures the constructed world, she reveals that she intends to break reality to reach the Underverse and Omega’s body. The Doctor falls with Poppy on his mind; the story continues in “The Reality War.”

Is “Wish World” a remake of “The Last of the Time Lords”?

Engadget’s Daniel Cooper describes “Wish World” as a “bizarro remake” of “The Sound of Drums” and “Last of the Time Lords.” The comparison has concrete support: both stories feature authoritarian Britain, a Doctor incapacitated by a villain, and an antagonist who turns the Doctor’s helplessness into theatrical spectacle. “Wish World” also uses a first installment to establish the conflict before its conclusion.

But the resemblance is a critical interpretation, not a production fact or a claim that the plots are identical. “Wish World” builds its own premise around the manufactured domestic life, Poppy, and the Rani’s plan for the Underverse and Omega. Those elements shift the question from whether the Doctor can simply defeat a political tyrant to what is real, what he remembers, and what the Rani hopes to reach.

Does “Wish World” work as the first half of the finale?

Doctor Who TV’s reviewer finds the episode slow and weighted toward exposition and setup, while noting that a first part is difficult to judge without its conclusion. That is a fair measure of the episode’s trade-off: it has to establish the false world, the resistance, the Rani’s motives and the larger mythology, but its decisive payoff is deferred to “The Reality War.”

The manufactured-life conceit gives the setup an intimate point of focus. John’s doubts matter not only because they threaten Conrad’s world, but because waking up as a husband and father gives the Doctor something emotionally specific to lose. Ruby’s rejection and turn toward resistance supply a second route through the story, connecting the political setting to people living under its rules. The Rani and Omega plot, by contrast, is more dependent on franchise mythology and exposition.

The episode’s clarity therefore depends on how much weight a viewer gives each thread. Its basic situation is legible: this world is artificial, the Doctor is being pushed to remember himself, and the Rani wants access to the Underverse. The reasons that make the Rani’s plan matter on a larger scale are less self-contained within this installment. As a finale opener, “Wish World” gives viewers a strong forward question rather than a complete dramatic resolution.

How does the political satire fit the story?

The Unified National Insurance Team’s deliberately dull, bureaucratic name and low-tech workplace make the altered Britain feel controlled through routine as much as spectacle. Ruby’s expulsion for voicing doubt shows the cost of challenging that order, and Shirley Bingham’s resistance gives the political setting a human consequence.

This satire is most effective when it is embodied in those daily pressures. The authoritarian Britain also echoes the earlier Master story, so the setting can feel familiar; the domestic fiction and the people rejected by the system are what give this version a distinct angle. The episode’s camp theatricality is part of that design, though viewers looking for a wholly new political premise may find the echoes more prominent than the variation.

What does the cliffhanger set up in “The Reality War”?

The ending leaves the Doctor falling toward the Underverse, with Poppy foremost in his thoughts. That image links the cosmic stakes of the Rani’s plan to the emotional complication at the center of John and Belinda’s constructed life. The official account of “The Reality War” confirms that the next episode continues from the Doctor’s fall and the Rani’s plan.

As a cliffhanger, it works less as a standalone answer than as a transition: the false world has begun to break, the Doctor’s identity is returning, and the danger has moved toward the Underverse. Whether the story can make that mythology pay off emotionally belongs to the second half, not to this episode alone.

What the creators intended for the Rani and finale

In an official Doctor Who interview dated 20 May 2025, writer and showrunner Russell T Davies described the Rani as a classic enemy and a scientist “more amoral than immoral.” He said the character has relatively few continuity obligations, which can make her accessible to new viewers, while the name may also lead younger fans toward earlier stories featuring Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. Those remarks explain the intended characterization; they do not by themselves settle how successfully the episode conveys it.

Director Alex Sanjiv Pillai described the two-part finale’s intended tone as punchier, dramatic, tense and frightening, and discussed the scale of the Bone Palace set and the Doctor–Rani conflict. These are production aims and design context rather than a guarantee of how every viewer will experience the episode.
