Doctor Who has a reported continuity callback linking “Midnight” to the 60th-anniversary special “The Giggle”—but it does not establish that the unseen creature from “Midnight” is the same species as any anniversary monster. The strongest monster-to-monster comparison is with the Not-Things in “Wild Blue Yonder,” and that remains a thematic parallel, not confirmed canon.
What connection did “The Giggle” make to “Midnight”?
A report by CultureSlate says Russell T Davies pointed out during BBC iPlayer commentary for “The Giggle” that Galvanic radiation had appeared on the planet Midnight. The report describes this as a callback through the UNIT Galvanic Beam’s radiation—not as the return or identification of the entity that threatened the Doctor in the 2008 episode.
This detail is reported secondhand: the commentary recording or an official transcript has not been independently verified here. The careful conclusion is that “The Giggle” reportedly echoes a piece of “Midnight” lore, not that it confirms a connection between the two stories’ monsters.
Are the “Midnight” entity and the “Wild Blue Yonder” Not-Things the same?
No confirmed link is established. “Wild Blue Yonder,” another 2023 anniversary special, features Not-Things that imitate the Doctor and Donna. Reviews and commentary have compared their mimicry and the episode’s enclosed, unsettling setting with “Midnight.” That resemblance supports a comparison between the stories’ horror techniques; it does not prove shared species, origin, or mythology.

| Question | “Midnight” entity | “Wild Blue Yonder” Not-Things |
|---|---|---|
| What does it imitate? | The entity’s imitation is part of the episode’s threat; the comparison coverage does not establish a species name or origin. [c003] | The Not-Things imitate the Doctor and Donna. [c003] |
| How is it presented? | The threat remains unseen and unexplained. [c003] | The Doctor-and-Donna doubles make the imitation visible. [c003] |
| Does the story establish a shared origin? | No shared origin with the Not-Things is established in the sources reviewed. [c003][c004] | No shared origin with the “Midnight” entity is established in the sources reviewed. [c003][c004] |
The difference in presentation matters: one story builds fear around an unseen presence, while the other shows the doubles. Similarities between those approaches can be meaningful without amounting to a canon reveal.
Does “The Star Beast” also refer to “Midnight”?
Yes, in a separate way. Nerdist’s Easter-egg guide notes that “The Star Beast” includes an image of the planet Midnight in a flashback sequence. That is a visual reference to the earlier episode; it does not connect the Midnight entity to the Meep or another anniversary monster. Nerdist’s guide to “The Star Beast” Easter eggs identifies the reference.

- A reported continuity callback: CultureSlate attributes the Galvanic-radiation observation to Davies’s iPlayer commentary on “The Giggle.” [c001]
- A critical parallel: Coverage compares “Midnight” with “Wild Blue Yonder” on atmosphere and mimicry, but does not confirm the creatures are related. [c003][c004]
- A visual Easter egg: “The Star Beast” reportedly shows the planet Midnight in a flashback. [c002]
None of these points establishes that the unseen entity has the same identity, species, or origin as a 60th-anniversary monster. Nor do they establish that the Toymaker created or controls it. The most defensible reading is a reported lore callback alongside a separate, evocative resemblance between two episodes’ horror.
