1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSometimes—but mostly when they are treated as one movement that saved rock. The Strokes, White Stripes, Hives and Vines were grouped together in the early 2000s, yet “overrated” can mean several different things: that the songs do not hold up, that their influence is exaggerated, or that the press made their commercial reach sound bigger than it was. Those are separate claims, and the bands do not earn the same verdict on each.
Why were these bands grouped together?
Early-2000s coverage presented the Strokes, White Stripes, Hives and Vines as part of a guitar-rock or garage-rock revival. The Washington Post described the four as contributors to a guitar-rock renaissance; the Los Angeles Times noted that attention to the Strokes helped draw notice to the Stripes, Hives and Vines.
But a shared moment and a few musical traits do not necessarily make a coherent scene. In a 2002 Observer review, Kitty Empire argued that labels and journalists were manufacturing a movement from bands spread across countries. A decade later, Pitchfork recalled the Strokes as a bracing alternative to what its writer considered a safe indie landscape, while describing the broader “Return of Rock” framing as a sudden media moment. The grouping tells us as much about how the bands were marketed and covered as it does about their music.
What makes the “overrated” case persuasive?
The rhetoric outran the evidence
The critical question is less whether these bands mattered than whether the language around them—especially the idea of a rock revival led by saviors—was proportionate. In 2002, the Los Angeles Times observed that it was still an open question whether the Strokes would become a lasting chapter or a footnote, even as the excitement around them spread to other acts.

Empire’s Observer review offered a sharper contemporary backlash. She called the scene a lie, criticized the Vines’ live impact, and argued that the Hives recycled riffs without enough songwriting substance. Those are a reviewer’s judgments, not settled facts, but they show that skepticism appeared alongside the praise from the start.
Critical visibility was not the same as mass popularity
A later Stereogum retrospective challenges the memory that the Strokes and their peers were the biggest bands in the world at their peak, contrasting their cultural profile with the greater commercial popularity of Linkin Park and Nickelback. That distinction matters: a band can dominate critics’ conversations and magazine covers without dominating the charts or the broader listening public.

Why a blanket dismissal misses what worked
The Strokes had a specific musical identity
The Strokes’ debut, Is This It, was not only a press phenomenon. The Washington Post described its stripped-down guitars, taut rhythms, Julian Casablancas’s distorted vocal, melodic hooks and short, tightly arranged songs. The paper reported that the 36-minute album placed second in the 2001 Village Voice national critics poll, behind Bob Dylan’s Love and Theft. Albert Hammond Jr. told the Post, “I never felt part of a movement.”
The Recording Academy’s 2021 anniversary account says the Strokes brought lo-fi aesthetics into mainstream rock and notes that the album’s release differed by territory. It also reports that “Last Nite” reached the top five on U.S. alternative rock radio and received RIAA platinum certification. Those details support a case for real reach and a distinct sound, even if they do not prove that the band rescued rock.

The Vines had more than revival styling
In its 2021 retrospective, ABC Australia’s Double J describes the Vines’ Highly Evolved as combining grunge blasts with pop sensibility and reports that it reached No. 11 on the U.S. chart. The account also describes early acclaim giving way to backlash and a later reappraisal. That arc complicates the idea that the band was simply a disposable piece of a manufactured scene.
How to judge them without conflating hype, influence and quality
“Overrated” becomes more useful when it is tied to a particular claim. A band can be uneven, influential, commercially modest and overpraised at the same time. Ask which yardstick you mean:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Songs and albums: Do the records still work when heard apart from the press story? This is a listening judgment, not something settled by chart positions or retrospective praise.
- Distinctiveness: Does each band have an identity beyond retro styling and shared timing? The Strokes’ tightly arranged, melodic approach and the Vines’ grunge-and-pop combination suggest different answers, not one common sound.
- Influence: Did they make guitar bands feel newly viable or visible? Influence is a separate question from how many records an act sold.
- Reach versus hype: Did actual audience size match talk of a rock renaissance? Contemporary attention and later accounts of commercial popularity do not describe the same thing.
The numbers should be read as dated reports, not combined into one definitive sales total. The Los Angeles Times reported in 2002 that Is This It had passed 500,000 U.S. copies. The Washington Post reported in 2004 940,000 U.S. copies and more than one million overseas. These are snapshots published at different times; neither is a current sales figure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, are they overrated?
If “overrated” means that the press sometimes inflated the scale and unity of an early-2000s rock revival, yes. The evidence supports a distinction between the bands’ cultural visibility and the grand claims made for a movement. If it means that the music was undeserving of attention, the answer is no as a blanket judgment: the records had identifiable strengths, and the groups were not interchangeable. The most defensible verdict is that the scene was overpackaged, while the bands’ value has to be judged one record and one claim at a time.
