Possibly—but Taylor Swift has not confirmed the connection. The title of The Tortured Poets Department resembles “The Tortured Man Club,” the name of a WhatsApp group Joe Alwyn said he shared with actor Paul Mescal. That documented similarity is the basis for a fan theory, not proof of Swift’s intent.
Why fans connect the title to Joe Alwyn
Alwyn described the group chat in a 2022 British GQ interview. He said a mutual friend created it with him and Mescal after Alwyn was cast in a project, and that its name was “The Tortured Man Club.” He added that the name reflected Mescal’s character Connell and Nick, Alwyn’s character in Conversations with Friends. Read the interview in British GQ.
The resemblance is easy to see: both names begin with “The Tortured,” and both describe a group. Fans and commentators have therefore suggested that Swift’s album title may nod to Alwyn’s chat. TIME described the connection as fan speculation, while The Ringer framed it as an apparent reference—not as a confirmed explanation. TIME’s account of the theory; The Ringer’s interpretation.
What is known—and what is not
| Claim | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|
| Alwyn used the name “The Tortured Man Club” | Alwyn said in his 2022 British GQ interview that a mutual friend created the WhatsApp group with him and Paul Mescal. |
| Swift’s album title resembles the group name | The wording is similar, which explains why fans have proposed a connection. |
| Swift intended the title as a reference to Alwyn | Not confirmed by the sources cited here. Similar wording and commentary about a fan theory do not establish her intention. |
| The album is definitively about Alwyn | The title connection alone does not establish that claim. |
Swift has said she enjoys leaving clues and Easter eggs for fans, while also noting that she can take the practice too far. That general comment, reported by ELLE, describes her approach to clues; it does not confirm what this album title means.

Why “new album” needs a date
Swift announced The Tortured Poets Department at the 2024 Grammy Awards and said it would be released on April 19. In August 2025, the Associated Press reported that she had announced The Life of a Showgirl as her twelfth studio album. So TTPD is the album meant by the original question, but it is no longer her newest announced studio album according to that 2025 report.
