In the Step Brothers Catalina Wine Mixer climax, Will Ferrell sings Andrea Bocelli’s “Por Ti Volare,” while John C. Reilly plays drums. A 2018 account explicitly says Ferrell is really singing and Reilly is really drumming. That confirms they performed those parts, but it does not establish whether every sound in the finished scene was captured live or later edited.
What happens at the Catalina Wine Mixer?
The performance is the film’s climactic payoff: Brennan (Ferrell) sings “Por Ti Volare” as Dale (Reilly) accompanies him on drums. The Ringer’s oral history describes the scene as both a comic showstopper and a resolution to Brennan’s fear of singing; director Adam McKay recalled, “We had the idea that [Brennan] was afraid to sing.” The Ringer’s oral history of Step Brothers.
Were Ferrell and Reilly actually performing?
Yes. A 2018 Maxim retrospective says Ferrell is really singing and Reilly is really drumming in the Catalina Wine Mixer scene. The careful distinction is that the reporting confirms their performances, not the precise recording process: the sources do not specify how much was recorded live on set, overdubbed, or adjusted in post-production. Why does the drum-set storyline feel personal?
Reilly told NPR’s Fresh Air in 2008 that his brother played drums and was protective of his kit. Reilly recalled sneaking in to play it when his brother was away, and described a childhood band in which he was lead singer while his brother played drums. McKay said the movie’s drum-set conflict drew on Reilly’s stories about his brothers’ drum set. Those anecdotes informed the premise; they do not mean that the film’s events are all autobiographical. Sony’s official Step Brothers page lists the film on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. That listing does not establish current retailer stock or differences in extras or picture quality. Sony Pictures’ official film page.
