He nearly vanished during story development; the filmmakers ultimately kept him as a comic complication for Moana. The documented details below focus on what is known about the character, his voice and his place in the film’s development—not padded trivia to reach 15.
What Heihei does in Moana
Disney’s Japanese character page describes Heihei as Moana’s pet chicken. It portrays his intelligence as close to zero: he can move forward, peck at food and scream, and tends to swallow whatever is in front of him. He accidentally gets aboard Moana’s boat and travels with her. Disney’s character profile is in Japanese; these details are paraphrased rather than presented as an official English translation.
Who voices Heihei—and why he doesn’t talk
Alan Tudyk voices Heihei. In a 2016 D23 interview, Tudyk describes the rooster as communicating through rooster sounds rather than ordinary spoken dialogue. He called him “a rooster and he’s stupid—in the nicest way.”
Heihei nearly got cut during development
Heihei’s role changed as the story evolved. Story artist Sunmee Joh recalled that an early version was smarter and snarkier; another concept made him a macho, watchdog-like rooster. As the team worked through the story, Heihei became vulnerable to removal. Joh described the challenge as “trying to figure out how to save Heihei [Moana’s pet chicken].”

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The solution was to make him a complication for Moana’s departure, rather than a capable guardian. A separate 2016 D23 “5 Things” feature also summarizes the change as lowering Heihei’s intelligence after the smarter, snarkier version nearly led to his removal. Both accounts come from Disney-owned outlets.
Story artist David Derrick recalled the team marking Heihei’s survival with a fried-chicken lunch. That is Derrick’s anecdote as reported by D23, not a separately verified production record.

Heihei returns in Moana 2
Disney’s 2024 announcement for Moana 2 says Heihei returns, again voiced by Alan Tudyk. The same company article reported that the sequel’s trailer received 178 million views in its first 24 hours; that is a Disney-reported trailer figure, not a statistic about Heihei.
What is—and isn’t—established about Heihei merchandise
Disney’s sequel announcement describes Moana merchandise as including toys, among other categories, but does not identify a current Heihei-specific product. A search for a “Moana Hei Hei plush toy” is a reasonable way to look, not proof that a particular item is available or in stock. Check that a listing actually depicts Heihei and review its format, size, materials, age guidance, seller and current price before buying.

Film context, not Heihei trivia
Walt Disney Animation Studios lists the original Moana release date as November 23, 2016, with Ron Clements, John Musker, Don Hall and Chris Williams directing and Osnat Shurer producing. D23 has also reported that the film’s artists asked astronomers to research stars visible in Pacific Island skies 2,000 years ago. Those are production details about the film, not additional facts about Heihei.
