Disney’s most enduring songs are often collaborations: a composer shapes the melody and musical world, while a lyricist gives the song its words and point of view. There is no official ranking of the “best” Disney songwriters, so this editorial guide focuses on memorable melodies, storytelling through song, cultural reach, and influence across films, television, and parks. Why Disney songs are best understood through their collaborators
A song credit is not always a single name. Composers create music; lyricists write words; some creators do both, and many celebrated Disney songs came from a team. Naming the collaborators makes it easier to understand how a song works—and avoids giving one person credit for another’s contribution.

Disney’s official The Little Mermaid soundtrack page credits songs and score to composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman. Their collaboration is a clear example of how Disney songs can advance a story while remaining memorable on their own. D23 describes Ashman as a producer and lyricist whose breakthrough in Disney animation came with the film.

Menken described Ashman’s knack for writing on multiple levels: “Howard’s lyrics,” as Menken later recalled, “would wink at the adults and say something to the kids at exactly the same time.” The line captures a useful distinction between a song that merely pauses a story and one that enriches it for different listeners.
Menken’s approach to songwriting
Menken has explained that the emotional and narrative content should be clear even before a listener takes in the lyrics: “Songs are a very familiar vocabulary to people and I’ve always believed that you should be able to understand not only the feeling, but the content of the song, by just hearing the music and not even the lyrics. Menken’s Disney work also includes Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. D23 and Menken’s official biography each report eight Academy Awards; neither page states the year for that figure. The total is a measure of documented recognition, not a complete measure of a songwriter’s influence.
Robert and Richard Sherman: songs for films, television, and parks
A partnership with a wide Disney footprint
Brothers Robert and Richard Sherman wrote music and lyrics together, with songs heard across Disney films, television shows, and theme parks. The National Endowment for the Arts says they began a ten-year exclusive association with Walt Disney in 1960 and wrote over 200 songs for Disney. The NEA page does not state a publication year for that statistic.

Their best-known film work includes Mary Poppins, with “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” and “Feed the Birds.” D23 says the brothers received two Oscars for the film: best score and best song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee.” Their songs’ presence in parks as well as on screen is part of why their legacy reaches beyond film credits.
The meaning behind “Feed the Birds”
Robert Sherman recalled the song’s message this way: “The point of the song—that it doesn’t take much to give a little kindness—was what really registered with Walt.” The Walt Disney Company’s remembrance reports that Richard Sherman received nine Academy Award nominations, won two Oscars for Mary Poppins, won three Grammy Awards, and received 24 gold and platinum albums over a 65-year career. These are figures reported by the company; its page does not state a year for them. The brothers’ autobiography is titled Walt’s Time: From Before to Beyond.

Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez: songwriting beyond one franchise
Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez are a married songwriting team identified by Disney Music Publishing with Frozen and Frozen 2. Their Disney work also reaches Pixar: the publisher credits them with the Oscar-winning song “Remember Me” from Coco. That range makes their partnership a useful example of contemporary songwriting that crosses franchise boundaries rather than belonging to one film alone.

D23 connects Lin-Manuel Miranda to Moana and its song “How Far I’ll Go.” It also credits him as a producer and music collaborator on the live-action reimagining. For the 2023 live-action The Little Mermaid, D23 says Miranda wrote lyrics for three new songs composed by Alan Menken. Those credits illustrate a recurring Disney pattern: a new project can pair an established composer with a lyricist bringing a distinct voice.

Menken’s other major lyricist partnerships
Tim Rice and “A Whole New World”
D23 identifies Tim Rice as a Menken collaborator and lyricist on “A Whole New World” from Aladdin. The example reinforces why composer and lyricist credits should be read together: the music and words are different contributions to the same song.
Stephen Schwartz and “Colors of the Wind”
D23 also identifies Stephen Schwartz as the lyricist for “Colors of the Wind” from Pocahontas, with Menken as composer. Like the other partnerships here, it is more informative to name both creators than to treat the song as the work of a lone songwriter.
How to think about a “best” Disney songwriter list
There is no single objective way to rank songwriters. Awards, memorable melodies, the ability to tell a story through music, cultural reach, and work across films, television, and parks all reveal different kinds of achievement. A high award total can signal recognition, but it cannot by itself settle artistic merit or audience attachment.
The collaborations in this guide show several distinct kinds of impact: Menken and Ashman’s composer-lyricist work on The Little Mermaid; the Sherman brothers’ reach across Disney entertainment; the Lopez team’s work across Frozen and Coco; and Miranda’s projects with Disney collaborators.
