In August 2026, Ali said he had moved on and would not be part of a version that went ahead. That makes the Ali-led film effectively over, but the available evidence does not establish that Marvel formally cancelled every possible future Blade project.
What happened to Marvel’s Blade movie?
Marvel had scheduled the film for February 14, 2025, after moving it from September 6, 2024. The studio later removed it from the release calendar. Screen Daily reported that Predator: Badlands took the November 7, 2025 slot associated with Blade. These were release-calendar changes, not confirmation that production was ready to begin or a public announcement cancelling every future film about the character. Marvel’s June 2023 schedule update and Screen Daily’s account of the 2025 calendar change document the dates.

Why was the film delayed?
The project went through creative turnover: director Bassam Tariq departed in 2022, and later reporting connected further creative changes and delay with the 2023 writers’ strike. Those events help explain the troubled path to the calendar removal, but they are reported contributors, not a single official explanation from Marvel for why the film did not proceed. The schedule changes alone do not establish a definitive cause.
Is Mahershala Ali still playing Blade?
No. In an August 3, 2026 report, the Los Angeles Times quoted Ali as saying, “If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it,” and, “So we’re not doing the movie.” Ali said he had moved on. His comments make clear that he is no longer attached to the proposed film; they are his account of the project, not a Marvel press release announcing the status of every possible Blade production. The Los Angeles Times report provides the context for his remarks.

Did Disney officially cancel every Blade project?
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Disney removed the Ali-led film from its release calendar, and Ali has said he is no longer doing it. The current Walt Disney Studios Marvel movies listing does not state the project’s status. No direct studio statement in the available sources definitively cancels every possible future Blade project, so it would be too broad to say the character or all future adaptations are formally cancelled.
What Marvel has said about the stalled project
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige expressed regret that the Ali project did not get off the ground. As reported by GamesRadar+, Feige said he felt “like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala [Ali].” Feige’s remark acknowledges that the planned film failed to materialize with Ali, but it does not by itself announce what Marvel may do with the character next. GamesRadar+ reports Feige’s comments.

How this differs from the earlier Blade films
Ali’s proposed film was a new Marvel Studios project, distinct from the earlier Blade films starring Wesley Snipes. Snipes’s appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine was a return by that earlier version of Blade; it was not the release of Ali’s film or a replacement for it.
