The available reporting does not establish that Taylor Swift copied songs on The Life of a Showgirl. Release-era coverage reported that listeners were comparing songs on The Life of a Showgirl with earlier music, and that some comparisons escalated into plagiarism accusations. Rolling Stone Australia’s October 10, 2025 feature included a Berklee professor’s assessment that one comparison was “objectively dissimilar”; the professor also noted that a chord progression can be unusual without being unique. That was commentary on one comparison, not a verdict about every claim or the album as a whole. Rolling Stone Australia’s coverage does not amount to a complete, independent audio analysis of every comparison circulating online.
So the careful answer to “What songs does the album sound like?” is that comparisons were reported, but resemblance alone does not establish copying. A specific claim has to identify what material is allegedly shared and whether that material is protected expression.
What is the documented “Father Figure” use?
At the album’s release, coverage reported both songwriting credits and a statement from the George Michael estate. The estate said it was “delighted when Taylor Swift and her team approached us earlier this year about incorporating an interpolation of George Michael’s classic song ‘Father Figure’ into a brand new song of the same title to be featured on her forthcoming album.” Release coverage reproduced the statement and reported the credits.

An acknowledged interpolation is a documented, intentional use; it is not evidence that other online comparisons are valid or that undisclosed copying occurred. Keep the two situations distinct: an estate statement and credit identify a particular use, while a social-media comparison is an allegation to evaluate on its own evidence.
What would a meaningful song comparison examine?
Copyright distinguishes the musical composition from the sound recording. A composition includes music and accompanying lyrics; a sound recording is the fixed sounds of a particular performance. The U.S. Copyright Office explains the distinction in its overview of copyright. A claim should say whether it concerns a composition element—such as melody, rhythm, harmony, or lyrics—or the use of a particular recording.

A useful comparison identifies the exact passages and asks:
- Is there a meaningful match in melody or lyrics, rather than a broad resemblance in mood or style?
- How do rhythm and harmony compare in the specific passages?
- Does the allegation concern the underlying composition or a particular recorded performance?
- Are credits or an explicit statement documenting an intentional use?
A shared genre, production texture, or mood is not proof by itself. The Copyright Office’s Compendium guidance on musical works says a short sequence of standard chords alone is not sufficiently creative for copyright protection. An arrangement can involve more choices, including voicing and counterpoint, so a comparison should not reduce a complete passage to its chord names. These principles help frame a claim; they do not substitute for a qualified legal analysis of particular songs.

Is there a lawsuit alleging the songs were copied?
The lawsuit reported by the Associated Press in March 2026 concerns alleged trademark infringement involving the album title and Maren Wade’s “Confessions of a Showgirl” brand. It is a separate title-and-branding dispute, not a lawsuit alleging that songs on the album copied other songs. The AP report describes the trademark allegations. The available reporting does not establish the lawsuit’s current status or a court finding about song copying.
