Why the sequel was part of a longer plan
Gudegast said the “long form of the story was sort of mapped out from the beginning.” In a December 16, 2024 interview with ComingSoon, he described the intention as building a franchise around “very elaborate, fascinating heists all over the world.” He also said research for the first film yielded material that could not fit into one movie. Gudegast discussed researching diamond-police investigations and spending time with thieves from the Balkans. That is background on his research process; it does not make the film a documentary or establish that its plot recounts one specific real heist.
What Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is about
The 2018 film’s sequel brings back Gerard Butler as Nick “Big Nick” O’Brien and O’Shea Jackson Jr. as Donnie Wilson, with Gudegast returning as writer-director.
