Burke later said she used crystal meth in an effort to keep weight off. That disclosure was reported by the Los Angeles Times in 2024 as a summary of her podcast interview, not as an independently verified medical or behavioral record.
Why was Delta Burke fired from Designing Women?
Burke, who played Suzanne Sugarbaker, left the series in 1991 after its fifth season amid a contentious, highly publicized conflict with producers Linda Bloodworth-Thomason and Harry Thomason. A later Los Angeles Times retrospective described the exit as part of a backstage dispute, but the reporting cited here does not establish one settled cause for the firing.

Weight became a prominent part of the public story, but accounts from Burke and Bloodworth-Thomason complicate the claim that it alone drove the split.
What did Burke and the producer say about weight?
Burke’s 1995 clarification
In a 1995 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Burke said other people had told her she might be fired if she gained weight. She distinguished that warning from what the producers had said directly: “The Thomasons … never said anything like that.” She also said, “Weight wasn’t as much of an issue as the press made it.” Read the 1995 interview.

Bloodworth-Thomason’s 1989 comments
In a contemporaneous 1989 Los Angeles Times report, executive producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason said she had not objected to Burke’s weight and thought Suzanne was more interesting as an overweight character. Her remarks offer a different perspective from the weight-related warnings Burke said she heard from other people. Read the 1989 report.
What did Burke say about using meth to control her weight?
In 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported that Burke discussed her long struggle with weight and said she used crystal meth to keep pounds off during an interview on the Glamorous Trash podcast. The newspaper’s account is a report of Burke’s first-person disclosure; the original podcast recording or transcript is not linked here, so details such as exact timing, frequency, or circumstances should not be inferred. The report does not establish a diagnosis, treatment, or medical consequence. It supports describing this as Burke’s account of her own behavior, not as a verified medical history.
How the story developed
- 1989: Bloodworth-Thomason publicly addressed Burke’s weight and the character of Suzanne in the Los Angeles Times.
- 1991: Burke was fired after the fifth season amid a public conflict with the producers, according to a later retrospective.
- 1995: Burke told the Los Angeles Times that the producers had not directly threatened her over weight and that press coverage overstated its importance.
- 1998: Burke published her memoir, Delta Style: Eve Wasn’t a Size 6 and Neither Am I.
- 2024: The Los Angeles Times reported Burke’s podcast disclosure about using crystal meth in an effort to control her weight.
The 1991 firing and the later meth disclosure are related in public discussion through Burke’s weight struggles, but the available accounts do not prove that weight was the sole cause of her departure or establish a more exact chronology for her drug use.

Burke’s memoir, Delta Style: Eve Wasn’t a Size 6 and Neither Am I (1998), was revisited in the podcast episode covered by the 2024 report. It is relevant background on her public account of body image and weight; it should not be treated as proof of the disputed circumstances of her firing.
