Demi Moore cut about six inches of her hair after she was hired for Ghost and before her first day of filming. Director Jerry Zucker’s surprise made the choice feel risky, but Moore later said the cut was inspired by a photograph of Italian actress Isabella Rossellini. Her comments about Bruce Willis point to a broader influence on her confidence at work—not a specific instruction to change her hair.
Moore arrived at Ghost with a dramatically different haircut
In a 1991 profile, Moore recalled cutting about half a foot of hair between being hired for Ghost and arriving for her first day. Zucker’s bulging eyes told her he was shocked. Asked what might have happened if she had been fired for the haircut or for disagreeing with the director, Moore shrugged: “Then they’ll fire me.” The Washington Post, April 18, 1991
The timing explains why the cut could have threatened her role: it was a conspicuous change made after casting, before shooting. But the contemporaneous account documents Zucker’s reaction, not that Moore was actually dismissed or formally threatened with dismissal.
Isabella Rossellini was the haircut’s direct inspiration
Years later, Moore told The Howard Stern Show that a photograph of Italian actress Isabella Rossellini inspired the short style. She said she had not thought of the haircut as a conflict with filming until she saw Zucker’s face. Looking back, Moore said, “I think it worked.” The Howard Stern Show, October 9, 2019

That account clarifies the distinction in the story’s title: Rossellini’s image was Moore’s stated inspiration for the cut itself. Willis’s influence, as described in the 1991 profile, was about Moore’s attitude toward work and taking ownership of what she wanted.
What Bruce Willis’s influence does—and does not—establish
In the same 1991 profile that recounted the haircut, Moore said she had learned from Willis, then her husband, and described his approach this way: “Bruce never apologizes for what he wants out of his work.” The article places those remarks alongside the haircut episode, supporting a broader connection between his example and her willingness to assert herself professionally. It does not establish that Willis told her to cut her hair or specifically urged her to take this particular risk.

The haircut also read as a statement about Molly Jensen
Ghost screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin later recalled that Moore had been hired “as a long-haired actress” and showed up on the first day of shooting with short hair. He interpreted the change as a declaration of her ideas about the role: “It announced to us that she had her own ideas about who her character was.” Vanity Fair, July 13, 2015
Rubin’s is a retrospective interpretation, while Moore’s later account identifies the photograph that inspired the hairstyle. Together, the accounts show how the same choice could be personal inspiration and an assertion of how she saw Molly Jensen.

The Washington Post characterized Ghost as the highest-grossing movie of 1990 in its 1991 profile. That contemporaneous description gives the production context, without changing what the accounts establish about the haircut: Moore made the choice before filming, Zucker was surprised, and she later believed it suited the character.
