Demi Lovato said that, looking back after turning 30, she realized the older-boyfriend relationship she had described was “not okay.” The remark came in a March 2026 conversation with Keke Palmer. Lovato did not name Wilmer Valderrama in that exchange; coverage connects the story to him through its context and the pair’s reported history.
What Lovato said in 2026
On Keke Palmer’s podcast Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, Lovato and Palmer discussed dating older men as teenagers and the pressures of growing up as young performers. They described feeling that people their own age could not understand their lives. Lovato reflected: “But then you look back in hindsight—when I turned 30 I was like, ‘That’s not okay.’” Complex reported the conversation on March 3, 2026.
Lovato did not say Valderrama’s name during this exchange. News coverage connects her account to him based on its context and their previously reported relationship, so the identification should be understood as contextual reporting—not a name Lovato supplied in the podcast conversation.
When did Lovato and Valderrama meet and start dating?
The reported timeline distinguishes their meeting from the start of their relationship. In her 2017 documentary Simply Complicated, Lovato said she met Valderrama when she was 17 and he was 29, and that they began dating after she turned 18. The Los Angeles Times quoted her account: “But I was only 17, so he was like, ‘Get away from me.’ After I turned 18, we began dating.” The paper reported their relationship lasted from 2010 to 2016.

That means the account is not that they began dating when Lovato was 17: she said they met at 17 and started dating after she turned 18. The ages and dates here describe this reported history; they do not, by themselves, establish a broader legal or clinical conclusion.
What Lovato said about age gaps later
In September 2023, Lovato spoke on The Howard Stern Show about past relationships with older men. She described looking back on them negatively and said that a large age gap during developmental years could be unhealthy and toxic. The Los Angeles Times quoted her saying, “For me, I was a teenager. And so to me, that’s gross. If you are 50 and 60, you’re fine,” and that during developmental years someone “should absolutely not be with somebody that is older than you by that much. It’s just unhealthy and toxic.” Those are Lovato’s personal judgments about her experience, not a clinical finding.

Did Lovato confirm that “29” is about Valderrama?
No public confirmation appears in the cited coverage. Lovato released “29” in 2022, prompting listeners to speculate about Valderrama. The Los Angeles Times reported at the time that she had neither confirmed nor denied that he was the song’s subject. The song’s title and the public discussion around it are not proof of whom it concerns.
