Why is Derby Day associated with black and white?
The black-and-white dress code is a familiar part of Derby Day fashion, but PerthNow presented three possible explanations rather than a confirmed origin:
- The Earl of Derby’s horse may have worn black and white when it won in 1787.
- Mourners may have adopted black after the death of King Edward in 1910.
- A 1960 Australian Women’s Weekly advertisement may have helped popularise the pairing by offering a £200 wardrobe prize for the best outfit, with entrants required to wear black and white.
These are theories reported by PerthNow, not settled historical findings. The article also quoted former MasterChef Australia judge Melissa Leong, who told The Age: “I really like the rules because it gives a structure that you build around or at least subvert.”

Celebrity attendance and race-day fashion were part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival’s public profile, but they do not indicate what any named attendee thinks about horse racing. An ABC News report published on 5 November 2024 described wider debate over animal welfare, gambling harm, and racing’s fashion and entertainment appeal.

ABC reported that Essential Report polling found 62 per cent of Australians aged 18–34 had low to no interest in the Melbourne Cup in the previous year, while 9 per cent had high interest. Those figures concern interest in the Melbourne Cup, not Derby Day attendance. ABC also reported that the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses said Melbourne Cup Carnival attendance had fallen by more than 30 per cent over the preceding 15 years; that is the advocacy organisation’s figure as carried by ABC, not an independently verified official attendance series.
