The Devil’s Chord is a bold, music-driven Doctor Who story whose biggest strength is Jinkx Monsoon’s flamboyant Maestro. Its Beatles premise, however, promises more of the band than the episode ultimately delivers. The result is an energetic spectacle with a real dramatic idea, even if its musical finale has to do some of the work the Beatles themselves do not.
What is The Devil’s Chord about?
In this 2024 story, the Doctor and Ruby meet the Beatles and discover that Maestro is changing history. That is the official premise, and it sets up two clear attractions: an encounter with one of popular music’s most famous groups and a villain who can make music part of the danger.
The Devil’s Chord is Season 1, Episode 2, written by Russell T Davies and directed by Ben Chessell. It premiered on 11 May 2024. Ncuti Gatwa plays the Doctor, Millie Gibson plays Ruby Sunday, and Jinkx Monsoon plays Maestro. DoctorWho.tv’s episode page lists those credits and describes the story; Disney+ Press independently summarizes the Doctor and Ruby’s meeting with the Beatles and Maestro’s attempt to change history.
Are the Beatles sidelined?
That is the episode’s main mismatch between promise and payoff. The Beatles are central to the hook, but they do not become the dramatic center of the story to the degree that the setup might lead a viewer to expect. Daniel Cooper makes that criticism in his Engadget review, writing that “The Beatles play second fiddle in their own episode of Disney+’s new show.” It is a sharp judgment, not a universal verdict: the story still uses the band’s presence to frame its conflict, but the episode’s most forceful presence is Maestro.

The absence of Beatles songs also shapes the experience. The Guardian reported that Russell T Davies said no Beatles music was used because of rights and cost. That reported explanation helps account for why the episode leans on music as an idea and dramatic force rather than as a parade of the group’s familiar recordings.
Does Maestro make a convincing villain?
Yes, especially as theatrical spectacle. Monsoon gives Maestro a heightened, commanding presence that makes the antagonist feel distinct from a conventional monster-of-the-week threat. The performance is extravagant by design; in a story about music altering reality, that larger-than-life quality suits the premise rather than distracting from it. The Guardian’s season-opening coverage also singled out Monsoon’s performance, though that response should be understood as one critical view rather than a consensus.

The character’s menace works best when the episode connects the performance to the consequences of a world without music. Maestro is not simply an excuse for a showy entrance: the threat is tied to the story’s central idea that music is part of what makes human life recognizable and meaningful. The more the story lets that idea carry the stakes, the more the spectacle has something to threaten.
Does the music make the stakes clear?
The musical conflict is easy to grasp at a broad level: Maestro is changing history, and music is the means through which the story makes that change visible. That gives the episode a clean, unusual engine. Its emotional case is more impressionistic than analytical, however. The story asks viewers to feel the absence and importance of music rather than build its world around a detailed explanation of how the musical rules work.

That approach fits Doctor Who at its most playful, but it leaves some of the drama resting on mood and performance. When the episode focuses on what is at stake in losing music, the premise feels evocative; when it depends on the Beatles to supply that feeling, their limited role becomes more noticeable.
Does the ending earn its exuberance?
The closing musical number shifts the tone toward celebration after a story built around an ominous threat. It is a conspicuous tonal turn, and not every viewer will find the transition seamless. But the finale is also the episode’s clearest expression of its belief that music is communal, joyful, and worth defending. Its visual and musical uplift gives the adventure a release that a darker ending would not.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
So the ending earns its exuberance as a thematic payoff more than as a realistic emotional landing. It does not erase the unease of the threatened future; it answers that unease with a burst of performance. If the number feels oversized, that excess is of a piece with Maestro’s theatrical world and the episode’s willingness to make music itself the spectacle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verdict: is this madness?
It is deliberate, colorful madness, with a genuine idea at its center. Monsoon’s Maestro gives the episode a memorable antagonist, and its music-based threat gives the story a distinctive shape. The Beatles are more hook than co-leads, which makes the premise feel larger than the band’s actual role. That limitation is real, but it does not cancel the pleasure of a story that turns music into both danger and release.
