The Guardian described the result as Warren’s 16th loss in the category. That count refers to the 2025 ceremony—not her latest Oscar result.
What happened at the 2025 Oscars?
At the 97th Academy Awards, Warren was nominated for “The Journey,” for which she wrote both the music and lyrics. The award went to “El Mal.” The Academy credits its music to Clément Ducol and Camille, and its lyrics to Ducol, Camille and Jacques Audiard. The Academy’s 2025 ceremony results list the winner and nominees.
Why was it called her 16th loss?
The Guardian reported that Warren’s 2025 nomination was her eighth consecutive in the category, following eight earlier nominations. It said her first nomination came in 1987 and counted the 2025 result as her 16th loss. These figures describe competitive Best Original Song nominations and outcomes, not every Academy honor she has received. The Guardian’s 2025 report also cited career totals of nine US No. 1 songs and 33 top-10 songs; those are figures reported by the newspaper, not independently rechecked here.
Did Warren later win, or receive another Oscar?
Warren received an Academy Honorary Award in 2022. The Academy’s citation reads: “To Diane Warren, for her genius, generosity and passionate commitment to the power of song in film.” This honorary recognition is separate from winning the competitive Best Original Song award. The Academy Awards database records the honor.

What happened at the 2026 Oscars?
The 16th-loss milestone was not the end of Warren’s Oscar story. At the 2026 ceremony, “Dear Me,” from Diane Warren: Relentless, was nominated; the Academy lists Warren for both music and lyrics. “Golden,” from KPop Demon Hunters, won. The Academy’s 2026 ceremony page records those results. Thus, “16th time” accurately describes the 2025 loss, while the 2026 result is a later nomination and a win for a different song.
