The shift gives the episode room to explore morale and connection, but its quieter, character-led approach also makes its pacing the central question.
What Episode 4 is trying to do
After completing training with Uzui, Tanjiro visits the Tokito residence. The official Episode 4 story page describes the slayers already training there as dispirited by Muichiro’s intense training and harsh words. That setup changes the emphasis from enduring a physical regimen to understanding how a Hashira’s manner affects the people he is supposed to prepare.
The installment’s central move is to put Tanjiro between Muichiro’s strictness and the trainees’ discouragement. The title points toward the emotional work at stake: whether a smile can signal a real change in the group’s dynamic, rather than simply interrupting the training.
Does the character work justify the slower pace?
The episode is strongest when it lets the training problem become a relationship problem. Muichiro’s severity gives the slayers a reason to withdraw, while Tanjiro’s presence creates an opening for the mood to shift. That focus adds a human dimension to the arc’s preparation for battle: discipline matters, but so does whether the people receiving it can keep going.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The trade-off is momentum. Training scenes can feel like a pause when they do not change the group’s situation or reveal something new about the characters. Here, the emotional premise supplies a purpose for the detour, but viewers looking for a decisive leap in Tanjiro’s abilities or the larger conflict may find the progress modest. The paper-airplane scene drew one Reddit commenter’s description of it as having “dragged on a bit”; that is an individual reaction, not evidence of a broader consensus.
How the installment lands as a review
Episode 4’s appeal rests on the contrast between Muichiro’s unforgiving approach and the morale problem it creates. Its quieter focus can make the training arc feel more personal, and the title’s promise of a smile gives that focus a clear emotional target. At the same time, the episode asks patience from viewers who want each installment to push the story forward at a brisk clip. Whether that pause feels earned depends on how much the change in relationships matters to you alongside visible training progress.

Where to watch or find the disc edition
The Crunchyroll Episode 4 page lists the official English title, story summary, language options, and a 16+ advisory that includes violence and suicide. Streaming availability is region-dependent. The anime’s April 8, 2024 announcement said the arc would begin on Crunchyroll on May 12, 2024, with weekly simulcast where the service was available; that launch announcement does not establish current access in every territory.
Aniplex lists a Hashira Training Arc volume 4 Blu-ray/DVD. This confirms a physical product exists, not that a particular retailer has stock or that a listing is compatible with your player or includes a specific episode. The separately listed English season Blu-ray package is described as seven discs—three Blu-ray discs and four soundtrack CDs—so its contents should not be assumed to match volume 4.
