Yes—by the measure used in Rotten Tomatoes’ August 13, 2025 ranking, Highest 2 Lowest is one of Denzel Washington’s highest-rated films: it scored 83% on the Tomatometer and ranked third among the 50 titles in the guide. That is a dated snapshot, not a verified live score, and it measures critics’ reviews rather than universal approval.
What is Denzel Washington and Spike Lee’s new movie called?
Highest 2 Lowest is a crime thriller directed by Spike Lee and starring Washington as David King, a music mogul drawn into a ransom plot and a life-or-death moral dilemma. Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, and A$AP Rocky are also listed in the cast. The film relocates Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low to contemporary New York City, and Apple TV Press describes it as Lee and Washington’s fifth collaboration.
Rotten Tomatoes’ film page characterizes the movie as a modern reinterpretation of Kurosawa’s thriller. Apple TV Press provides the collaboration and adaptation context on its film page.

The figure supports calling the film one of Washington’s best-reviewed titles in that specific ranking. It does not mean it ranks third among every film Lee has directed, nor does a critics’ aggregate score establish that every critic or viewer liked it. Rotten Tomatoes’ movie page did not provide a dependable live score or review count for this article, so the August 2025 figure should not be presented as the current score.
What do other reviews say?
Other measures give a more mixed picture. Metacritic’s release-era page showed a 74 Metascore based on 47 critic reviews and a separate user score of 4.8 based on 112 user ratings when accessed. These are Metacritic figures, not Rotten Tomatoes scores, and both the scores and counts can change.

In her Associated Press review, Lindsey Bahr gave the film two and a half stars out of four. She wrote: “Spike Lee’s ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ takes some time to find its groove. But once it does, when the film leaves the high rises and puts its feet on the New York pavement, it really sings.” Her assessment points to a useful distinction: the film’s reception includes both reservations about its early pace and praise for the energy it finds in the city.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus takes a more broadly positive view: “Spike Lee and Denzel Washington remix a classic with vibrantly contemporary results in Highest 2 Lowest, a swaggering thriller that lovingly showcases New York City.” Those viewpoints help explain why a strong Tomatometer placement can coexist with more qualified individual reviews.
