Spoilers for “Code Blues,” the season 1 finale of Dexter: Original Sin. The finale delivers an effective rescue and a grimly familiar Dexter ending, but Captain Spencer’s reveal feels easier to anticipate than the episode’s emotional turning point. That makes “Code Blues” satisfying in the moment while leaving its biggest surprise less surprising than it may intend.
What happens in the “Dexter: Original Sin” finale?
“Code Blues” is season 1, episode 10 and the season finale, according to Paramount+. Dexter tracks Captain Spencer to a container ship, where Spencer attacks him and floods Nicky’s cell. Dexter has to choose between chasing Spencer and rescuing the boy. He saves Nicky.
Spencer escapes for the moment, but Dexter later catches him at his ex-wife’s home before Spencer can kill her. Dexter kills Spencer, dismembers his body, and disposes of it at sea. The next day, Tanya offers Dexter a full-time place on her team.
Why Spencer’s reveal feels predictable
The episode identifies Spencer as the kidnapper, but the reveal lands less as a startling reversal than as the culmination of a narrowing mystery. In this review’s reading, the finale’s framing and the limited suspect field make Spencer’s role feel legible before the story confirms it. The available episode reporting does not establish a reliable scene-by-scene trail of clues, so the case for predictability is about the effect of the reveal, not a claim that a particular clue proves it.

That judgment is not universal. In a February 14, 2025 interview with TVLine, Patrick Gibson, who plays young Dexter, said, “Honestly, I did not see it coming,” adding that he “had my suspicions on other people.” His reaction is a useful counterpoint: a reveal can surprise an actor or some viewers and still feel mechanically signposted to others. The finale’s weakness is not that nobody could be surprised; it is that the confirmation does not generate as much fresh meaning as the episode seems to want from it.
Dexter’s choice to save Nicky is the stronger turn
The more revealing choice comes before Spencer’s capture. Dexter abandons the immediate pursuit to get Nicky out of danger. Gibson described the decision as a turning point for Dexter, emphasizing that the character acts virtuously against his overwhelming urges and instincts. That is Gibson’s interpretation, rather than a rule the episode establishes, but it captures why the rescue matters: Dexter’s violence is not the only force shaping his decisions, and a vulnerable child can outweigh the impulse to kill.

This choice gives the kidnapping plot a human center that the culprit reveal lacks. Dexter does not simply win by being more ruthless; he accepts the delay and risk involved in helping Nicky. The rescue also makes the later confrontation with Spencer feel like a consequence of Dexter’s protective instincts, not just a final opportunity to indulge his killer side.
Closure, with a familiar Dexter echo
On the immediate plot level, the finale closes the kidnapping story: Nicky is rescued, Spencer is stopped, and Dexter disposes of the body at sea. That final act deliberately recalls the methods associated with the older Dexter, making the prequel’s endpoint feel connected to the franchise’s established identity.

Tanya’s offer of a full-time place on her team supplies a different kind of forward motion. Dexter’s police work and secret life are now positioned closer together, an arrangement with obvious dramatic potential. The finale resolves its central danger while leaving room for the character story to continue; those two kinds of closure coexist, even if the killer reveal itself is comparatively familiar.
How the finale’s reception differs
Critical responses were not uniform. A secondary compilation of reviews characterizes Vulture’s response as criticism of the episode’s coherence and basic logic, while Game Rant reportedly found it entertaining but thought the motive explanation rushed and too on the nose. The same compilation says Telltale TV praised the balance between closure and future possibility. These are summaries of other outlets’ assessments, not a measured consensus, and no verified aggregate score or audience statistic is established here.

Does the finale’s ending work?
“Code Blues” works better as a character resolution than as a mystery payoff. Dexter’s decision to rescue Nicky gives the finale a meaningful moral beat, and the sea disposal plus Tanya’s offer connect that choice to the familiar shape of Dexter’s life. Spencer’s reveal, by contrast, is easier to read than it is to rethink once it arrives. The result is a prequel finale with satisfying pieces of closure, but a central twist that feels predictable in retrospect rather than genuinely destabilizing.
