Pankaj Mishra’s essay argues that Western journalism’s coverage of Israel’s war on Gaza reveals a deeper crisis: inherited stories of Western authority and postwar progress are increasingly challenged by decolonisation. The piece is a polemical interpretation, not a neutral report or a statistical study of media coverage.
What is the essay, and where did it come from?
Scroll published “Democracy dies in darkness – and decolonisation: Palestine and the ruins of Western journalism” on October 15, 2024. The article is a transcription of a lecture Pankaj Mishra delivered at the Royal Ontario Museum on September 16, 2024, and Scroll notes that it first appeared in n+1. Read the essay at Scroll.
Its form matters: Mishra is making an argument about journalism and political change, not presenting the results of a systematic content analysis. The examples and interpretations are his; the essay alone does not independently establish that the outlets he names acted as he describes.
What does Mishra argue about coverage of Gaza?
Mishra contends that Western news coverage often frames Israeli actions in passive or euphemistic language, gives prominence to claims he regards as false or unverified, and gives too little attention to Palestinian perspectives and histories. He discusses examples involving the BBC, The New York Times and the Associated Press.

Those are claims to assess against the underlying articles, not findings this essay proves by itself. A headline can shape interpretation, but evaluating a broader claim about an outlet also requires looking at the full story, its sourcing, updates, and the range of coverage over time.
Why does decolonisation matter to the argument?
Mishra uses decolonisation to mean more than the formal end of colonial rule. In his account, it also describes how people understand their histories and place in a world where Western political and cultural authority is contested. He connects that shift to media representation and to what he sees as unequal treatment across racial and geopolitical lines.

This is Mishra’s interpretive framework, not a definition on which the essay establishes consensus. Its role is to explain why he views Gaza coverage as part of a wider dispute over whose histories and political perspectives are treated as authoritative.
How does the essay place journalism in a longer history?
Mishra links contemporary reporting to Austrian writer Karl Kraus’s attacks on the press during the First World War and to his own experience writing about the “war on terror.” He attributes the line “In the beginning was the press and then the world appeared” to Kraus in 1921. Scroll is the source for that attribution; the essay’s publication does not itself verify it against Kraus’s original text.

The historical comparison supports Mishra’s larger point: journalism does not simply transmit events but can shape the stories through which readers understand them. In his view, the once-dominant Western account of progress and authority now competes with a more resonant account centered on decolonisation. He writes: “But this story in which several generations of Western journalists flatteringly recognised themselves now clashes with another, much bigger, more resonant and persuasive story: of decolonisation, the central event of the 20th century for the vast majority of the human population.”
What should readers make of the essay’s figures?
Mishra’s essay says that nearly 200 writers, academics and journalists had been killed in Gaza by the time he delivered the lecture in September 2024. The article does not provide a supporting dataset or an independently checkable citation for that total. It should therefore be understood as a figure Mishra cited in that 2024 essay—not as a verified statistic or a current count.

More broadly, the essay offers no independently documented statistical study of Western coverage. Its examples can prompt questions about language, sourcing and representation, but the article itself does not quantify a pattern across outlets.

Separate the essay’s argument from the evidence needed to test it. For each example it names, readers can compare the headline with the full report, check what sources and qualifications appear in the story, and examine whether later corrections or updates changed the account. Broader claims about an outlet require looking beyond a few selected examples and considering coverage across time.

That distinction does not make Mishra’s argument irrelevant; it clarifies what kind of work the essay does. It offers a forceful lens for considering how journalism represents Gaza and whose histories it foregrounds, while leaving its specific allegations open to independent checking.
