Shahid Kapoor anchors Deva’s stylish Mumbai cop thriller, though tangled plotting and loose ends keep its memory-loss mystery from fully delivering.

Deva is a handsome, atmospheric thriller built around Shahid Kapoor’s forceful performance and a police officer’s lost memories. Its visual confidence is more consistent than its storytelling: the mystery creates intrigue, but the screenplay’s loose ends and uneven pacing blunt the payoff.

What is Deva about?

Directed by Rosshan Andrrews, Deva is a 2025 Hindi action-mystery thriller starring Shahid Kapoor as Dev Ambre, a rebellious Mumbai police officer. After a serious accident leaves Dev with memory loss, he must piece together a high-profile murder investigation—and his own actions before the crash. Pooja Hegde, Pavail Gulati, Pravessh Rana, and Kubbra Sait are among the supporting cast. The film opened in Indian theaters on January 31, 2025, and runs 2 hours 34 minutes, according to its Rotten Tomatoes listing.

The premise makes Dev’s missing memories part of the investigation rather than a brief obstacle: he is trying to understand the case while also questioning what kind of officer he was before the accident. That uncertainty gives the film a useful source of suspense, even as the story’s answers prove less satisfying than its setup.

Where the film works: Kapoor, mood, and Mumbai

A commanding lead performance

Kapoor gives the film its strongest through-line. Scroll.in’s Nandini Ramnath describes his performance as blazing; The Times of India highlights how he moves between menace and vulnerability, while noting that some moments tip into excess. That volatility suits a protagonist who is both a police officer and a stranger to his own recent past.

A city seen from the ground

The film’s visual character is another clear strength. Scroll.in praises its matte-finish cinematography and editing, while Hindustan Times notes its attention to Mumbai neighborhoods and markets rather than relying on familiar landmarks. The city feels like a lived-in setting for the investigation, not merely a backdrop of recognizable sights.

Ramnath’s review captures the central tension in one sentence: “Style resoundingly trumps substance in Andrews’s first Bollywood outing, which is extraordinarily good-looking but has neither a halfway convincing plot nor engaging characters.” That is her assessment, not a universal verdict—but it neatly identifies why the film can be compelling to watch and frustrating to follow.

Where the mystery loses momentum

The critics differ on how well Deva sustains suspense. The Times of India calls it a slow burn that maintains tension, whereas Hindustan Times finds that the second half tests patience. Scroll.in is more skeptical about the plot and the depth of the characters. Together, those responses point to a thriller whose atmosphere and lead performance may hold attention even when its narrative becomes harder to trust.

The screenplay’s problems become more apparent as the story accumulates complications. Hindustan Times says the second half grows convoluted and leaves character arcs incomplete; The Times of India points to loopholes and unexplained loose ends. Bollywood Hungama also argues that the amnesia element is not handled satisfactorily. The result is a central mystery that raises questions effectively but does not resolve them with equal care.

How it relates to Mumbai Police

Deva is connected to Rosshan Andrrews’s 2013 Malayalam film Mumbai Police. Bollywood Hungama describes it as an official Hindi remake, while Scroll.in calls it a partial reworking. Those descriptions signal a relationship between the films, but not a scene-for-scene equivalence; the Hindi version changes and reshapes its material. The adaptation’s memory-loss premise remains central, though critics disagree about whether the film makes satisfying use of it.

Is Deva worth watching?

It depends on what you want from a cop thriller. If Kapoor’s intense performance, a stylized look, and an atmospheric Mumbai setting matter more to you than airtight plotting, the film offers reasons to stay with it. If you want a tightly resolved mystery, consistently paced second half, or fully developed supporting characters, its shortcomings are likely to stand out.

The critical ratings reflect that range of response rather than an audience consensus: The Times of India gave the film 3.5/5 in 2025, while Bollywood Hungama rated it 2.5/5 that year. Both are individual critics’ scores.
