Demi Moore did question whether acting was still where she should put her energy before The Substance—but she did not officially quit. In a May 2024 interview, she described years of uncertainty and said the film offered a role more dynamic than anything she had recently encountered.
Did Demi Moore quit acting?
No. The “almost quit” phrasing came from headline coverage, but Moore’s account was more qualified: “It’s not like I ever officially left, but I understand the sentiment and appreciate it.” She was describing a period of questioning, not announcing a resignation or retirement. Us Weekly reported her remarks from an Entertainment Weekly interview published May 23, 2024.

Why was she questioning her career?
Moore said that over roughly the previous four years she had wondered whether acting was what she should still be doing and whether it was where she should put her energy. She also described questioning her ability, value, and place in the industry. No recent project or role had felt sufficiently dynamic to fully engage her, she said. These comments describe uncertainty about her work and her place in it, not a settled plan to leave.
How did The Substance fit into that period?
Written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, The Substance stars Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid. Moore plays an actor facing ageism and rejection in the entertainment industry; the film uses body horror and satire to examine youth, appearance, and self-worth. Working Title lists the film’s release date as September 20, 2024.

- The Substance [Blu-Ray]
Moore said the role was unusually dynamic to explore. That makes the film a meaningful point in her account of reassessing her relationship with acting, but her comments do not establish that it alone changed a definite decision to retire. The distinction matters: she had been questioning whether acting was right for her, not confirming that she had quit and then returned.
Why Moore resisted the “comeback” label
In a later interview with The Guardian, published September 14, 2024, Moore again pushed back on the idea that she had disappeared from acting and returned. “It’s not like I’ve really left to come back,” she said. She also recalled wondering whether acting had “not ended, but like, was it ‘complete’?” The Guardian interview reinforces the difference between a period of reflection and a formal departure.
