This guide is about Devon, the English county and visitor destination in southwest England—not other places or uses of the name. It lies alongside Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset, and offers a mix of coastline, countryside, moorland, towns and outdoor activities.

Where is Devon?

Devon is in southwest England. Its neighboring counties are Cornwall to the west, Somerset to the northeast and Dorset to the east, according to Visit Devon. The name can refer to other places, so this article uses “Devon” to mean the English county and travel destination.

Administrative boundaries can matter when comparing figures: the Office for National Statistics labels its area profile E10000008 “County in Devon and Torbay.” That administrative geography is not automatically interchangeable with the visitor destination. See the ONS area profile for its boundary and lower-tier authorities.

What is Devon known for?

Devon combines coast and countryside, with moorland, towns, walking routes and outdoor activities among the features highlighted by its visitor information. Visit Devon describes the county as having two coastlines and two national parks; that is the destination board’s framing, rather than an independently verified statistical count. Its explore guide is a starting point for landscapes and outdoor ideas.

Devon County Council’s Strategic Plan 2025–2029 describes the county as covering 2,687 square miles, with 3,500 miles of walking routes and 842,313 people. These are figures presented in that plan, not a single harmonized set of current statistics; in particular, its population figure should not be mistaken for the 2021 Census result.

How many people live in Devon?

Devon County Council’s 2023 report on the Census 2021 records 811,600 people in Devon in 2021, up from 746,400 in 2011—an increase of 65,200, or 8.7%. These are Census figures for the geography used in the council report. The council’s later Strategic Plan 2025–2029 gives a separate figure of 842,313 people; it is a plan-era description and should not be substituted for the Census count.

The strategic plan also says Devon accounts for 30% of the country’s dairy industry. That is the council plan’s claim, not an independently checked national statistic.

When is the best time to visit Devon?

There is no single best season established for every visitor. Choose dates around what you want to do—coast, countryside or moorland; walking and other outdoor activities; or towns, heritage and attractions—and then check the practical details for those dates. A general destination overview cannot establish current transport schedules, opening hours, accessibility at a particular site or accommodation availability.

How to plan a Devon trip

Start with the kind of landscape and activities you want, then test the logistics for the specific places and dates. Different parts of the county may not offer equivalent transport or access.

  1. Choose a focus: decide whether you want coast, countryside, moorland or a mix, and whether walking, outdoor activities, attractions or a general holiday is the priority.
  2. Pick a base and route: use the places you intend to visit to guide where you stay and how you will travel, rather than assuming every area has the same connections.
  3. Check date-sensitive details: consult Visit Devon’s travel-planning page for information on getting to Devon, visitor centres, accessibility, attractions and places to stay. Verify schedules, opening hours, site access and accommodation directly for your dates.
