Derek Walcott’s account of watching Ramleela in Felicity, Trinidad, turns on a correction: he first saw the event as theatre, then understood that the people taking part experienced it as faith. The episode, in his 1992 Nobel lecture The Antilles: Fragments of Epic Memory, opens into a larger reflection on Caribbean history, cultural inheritance and the beauty of a living present. Scroll republished the lecture in 2017 under the headline “Derek Walcott (1930-2017): On watching the Ramleela in Trinidad and other fragments of epic memory.”
What text does the title refer to?
The title refers to Walcott’s Nobel Prize acceptance lecture, formally titled The Antilles: Fragments of Epic Memory. He delivered it on December 7, 1992; Scroll republished it on March 17, 2017. It is not a separate essay written in 2017. The Nobel Prize site publishes the lecture, and Scroll’s 2017 republication gives the episode its headline.
A standalone print edition, The Antilles: Fragments of Epic Memory: The Nobel Lecture, was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1993. Its cataloged US edition has ISBN 9780374105303; that bibliographic record does not establish current retail availability. The publisher’s catalog lists the edition.
What happens at Felicity?
Walcott arrives with friends in Felicity, a village on Trinidad’s Caroni plain, on the afternoon of a Ramleela performance. Costumed villagers gather in a field. Children carry bamboo arrows; music and narration fill the space; a large effigy is prepared for burning. Walcott initially looks at the scene through his own expectations of theatre and through a sense of cultural loss.

Then he recognizes that his frame is wrong. “I was seeing the Ramleela at Felicity as theatre when it was faith.” The line names the lecture’s central turn: Walcott had treated the event as an aesthetic object, while participants approached it as a sacred story. His account registers their belief, concentration, pleasure and joy, and questions the outsider’s impulse to judge a diasporic tradition by how closely it resembles an imagined original.
Walcott and his companions leave before the play begins and travel through the Caroni Swamp to watch scarlet ibises return at dusk. The birds, red flags and young archers gather into an image of visual abundance. The movement does not make history vanish; it lets the Caribbean’s beauty and the history of slavery, indenture and colonial violence remain present together.

What is Ramleela in Trinidad?
Ramleela, also commonly spelled Ramlila, is a performance tradition based on the Hindu epic Ramayana. Walcott calls it an epic dramatization. Its familiar narrative follows Rama’s exile, Sita’s abduction by Ravana, the conflict and her release, and Rama’s return. In his Felicity account, the important distinction is that the performance is not simply theatre for spectators: Walcott comes to recognize the devotional meaning participants give it.
A 2015 scholarly account describes Trinidad Ramleela as part of Hindu community life, performed in open-air village settings and observed in the season before Divali. It identifies a performance in Dow Village in 1880 as the earliest documented one it found, and distinguishes the First Felicity Ramlila from other Felicity events. These are details from that later secondary account, not claims established by Walcott’s personal recollection. The journal Nidān published the account.

The same article reports an estimate of more than 500,000 spectators at about 35 venues, attributing it to a 2012 Trinidad Express report. It is a dated estimate, not a current attendance figure.
What does “fragments of epic memory” mean?
Walcott’s fragments are not proof that Caribbean culture is merely incomplete. He describes a region shaped by the survival and remaking of materials carried by African and Asian peoples, alongside local experience, place and language. The Middle Passage and indenture produced histories of rupture; renamed places, mixed languages and new metaphors are among the ways those histories continue in altered forms.

That idea also describes artistic creation. A poet works with inherited fragments, reshaping them into an individual voice. Walcott rejects a model in which cultural value depends on reproducing an untouched original at a distant center. He sees the Felicity Ramleela as a local branch or abridgment that can retain epic scale. “Poetry is an island that breaks away from the main.” The image suggests both separation and creation: a new work emerges from inheritance without being only a copy.

Walcott’s dusk scene is not an argument that present beauty cancels past suffering. His line “The sigh of History meant nothing here” belongs to a moment of attention to the living landscape, not a claim that slavery, indenture or colonial violence did not matter. The lecture’s force comes from holding the two realities together: historical grief remains real, while the Caribbean present is more than a record of injury.

That balance matters to his response to Felicity, too. He does not claim to speak from inside Hindu belief. Instead, he makes visible his own misreading and the humility required to see a practice on its own terms. His essay becomes as much an account of looking—and correcting how one looks—as it is a meditation on landscape and memory.
