What happened to Hayley Erbert?
Hough said Erbert became disoriented at the end of a tour performance in Washington, D.C., and developed a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel. He said she needed an emergency craniectomy. ABC reported those details from his public statements on December 16, 2023; the available reporting does not establish why the vessel burst or provide further medical specifics.
Hough said on December 16 that Erbert would need another surgery to insert a skull implant. On December 21, ABC reported that he announced her cranioplasty had been completed as planned. ABC also said it could not independently confirm whether that cranioplasty was performed because of the earlier craniectomy. What is a craniectomy?
A craniectomy removes a piece of the skull and leaves it off temporarily rather than replacing it during the same operation. In a decompressive craniectomy, that opening gives the brain room when swelling or bleeding raises pressure inside the skull. The surgeon also addresses the underlying problem; the opening is covered and the incision closed, and the patient is monitored closely afterward. The skull normally protects the brain within a confined space. If pressure rises, removing a section can create room for the brain to swell temporarily while clinicians treat the cause and monitor the patient. Johns Hopkins describes this use in the context of traumatic brain injury; that general explanation does not establish that Erbert’s hematoma followed an injury. (Johns Hopkins Medicine)
How is a craniectomy different from a craniotomy and cranioplasty?
- Craniectomy: A piece of skull is removed and not immediately put back, allowing room for swelling when needed.
- Craniotomy: A section of skull is temporarily removed to reach the brain and is generally replaced during the operation.
- Cranioplasty: A later operation repairs a skull opening or defect, using the saved bone or a suitable implant depending on the case.
The terms describe different steps, not interchangeable names for one surgery. A cranioplasty is reconstruction after a skull defect has been created; it is distinct from the emergency decompression itself. In Erbert’s case, the public chronology is limited to Hough’s statements and ABC’s reporting.

What can recovery involve?
Recovery varies with the cause of the pressure, the extent of surgery, and the individual patient. General care may include intensive monitoring for vital signs, bleeding, or swelling; protection of the area where bone has not been replaced; follow-up; and rehabilitation. Cleveland Clinic notes that a helmet may be needed while the skull section is absent, but protection instructions are specific to the patient and care team. The removed bone may be saved for possible later use. In some cases, infection risk or bone resorption makes the original bone unsuitable, and a customized implant may be considered. Those are general options, not evidence about the material used in Erbert’s cranioplasty. (Johns Hopkins Medicine)

What is known about Erbert’s condition now?
The cited reports provide updates from December 2023, not a current health assessment or a long-term outcome. On December 16, Hough said, “Hayley is doing well. Her recovery process has been nothing short of a miracle.” That was his description, not a clinical assessment. On December 21, he called the cranioplasty “a significant milestone in my wife’s recovery journey” and credited supporters. Neither statement supplies a medical prognosis.
