Her hospitalization followed a December 2023 performance in Washington, D.C., when she became disoriented and was taken to hospital.
What happened to Hayley Erbert?
After a Symphony of Dance performance in Washington, D.C., in December 2023, Erbert became disoriented and was taken to hospital. Derek Hough said she had a cranial hematoma caused by a burst blood vessel and needed emergency craniectomy. He reported that she was stable and described the recovery ahead as “now on the long road of recovery.” ABC News reported Hough’s account on December 8, 2023.
ABC explained that a craniectomy can relieve pressure by removing part of the skull, which may later be replaced in a separate procedure called a cranioplasty. That general description does not establish details of Erbert’s individual treatment beyond what Hough reported.
What did Derek Hough say during her recovery?
February 2024: a sudden emergency and an uncertain return
In a February 2024 interview, Hough described how abruptly the emergency changed their lives: “It was, you know, just a million miles an hour, and then it just came to a screeching halt … very, very quickly, and it was jolting, to say the least.” He did not promise that Erbert would attend or return to the stage; he said any decision would depend on what felt right, what was safe, and medical clearance. ABC News covered his comments on February 26, 2024.
