Death in Paradise Series 14, Episode 5 builds its case around an unsettling football-ground puzzle: a star player is found shot in a changing room that appears to have no unseen route in or out. The episode also puts pressure on DI Mervin Wilson and gives Sergeant Naomi Thomas a personal thread involving someone from her past. The supplied subtitle, “The Broken Hearts Club,” is not verified as the episode’s official BBC title.
What happens in Death in Paradise Series 14, Episode 5?
Mervin begrudgingly agrees to attend a local women’s football match with the team. The outing turns into a murder investigation when the club’s star player is found with a fatal bullet wound. Commissioner Selwyn Patterson presses Mervin over a killing that took place under their noses, adding professional pressure to the case.
The episode’s premise is listed in the episode summaries at Rotten Tomatoes and Apple TV UK. Rotten Tomatoes lists February 28, 2025 as the air date.
How the football-ground murder puzzle is set up
The apparent contradiction is the hook: the changing room is accessible only from the pitch, yet spectators reportedly saw nobody enter or leave around the time of the killing. That turns an ordinary match setting into a closed-circle problem, where the question is not simply who had a motive, but how the crime could have happened in a space with an obvious point of access.

KPBS’s Series 14 guide supplies that access-and-witness detail. The available descriptions do not establish the victim’s identity, the clue sequence, the killer, or the final explanation, so those elements are left out here rather than guessed at.
Mervin and Naomi’s parallel character stories
The case places Mervin in a familiar procedural bind: he has to investigate a serious crime while facing scrutiny from Selwyn about how it happened so close to the team. The match also begins as an obligation he accepts reluctantly, putting him among the spectators before the investigation takes over.

Naomi’s episode thread is separate from the football-ground case: she confronts someone from her past. The available synopsis establishes that personal complication, but not its details or how it resolves. That gives the episode a second character focus without providing enough evidence to judge its dramatic payoff.
What the available review evidence says
The evidence supports a review of the episode’s setup, not a confident verdict on its execution. The sources available here do not establish how fairly the clues are presented, how the pacing develops, or whether the final reveal satisfies. Those are the decisive questions for a full mystery review, and answering them without verified viewing would risk inventing details.

Frederick wrote that the episode is “somewhat a reminder of why this show has been a British television staple.” That is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus score or a measure of audience response.
