Daniella Alvarez said she chose a below-the-knee amputation after complications during surgery left her foot without function. In a June 2020 account, she described the decision as a way to pursue dancing, running, cycling and swimming with a prosthesis. Reports from that month documented early recovery milestones; they do not establish her current health or mobility.
What led to Daniella Alvarez’s amputation?
In June 2020, Alvarez went to the hospital for surgery to remove an abdominal mass. People en Español reported that she said the mass was close to her aorta and that the aorta closed during the attempt to remove it. The outlet and Univision reported that medical complications during the operation led to the amputation of her left leg below the knee. These are details attributed to contemporaneous coverage, not a review of medical records.
Why did she choose a prosthesis?
People en Español quoted Alvarez explaining that her foot would not be functional. After discussion with doctors and her family, she said she decided to have a prosthesis so she could work toward activities she valued, including champeta and bachata dancing, running, cycling and swimming. This was her account of an individual decision, not general medical advice.
“I could have a foot but it wouldn’t be functional,” she said. “So the doctors and my family all talked about it and I made the decision of having a foot prosthesis that will allow me to dance champeta, bachata, to run, ride a bicycle, swim and do all the things I like.”

What did early recovery look like?
A June 27, 2020, HOLA! USA report described a video Alvarez shared showing her walking with prosthetic support. The report also said ischemia had affected her other foot and described special footwear supporting her right ankle. These details capture an early-recovery moment in 2020; they should not be read as a statement about her present condition.
