Dancing With the Stars pairings are made through producer judgment, not a publicly disclosed formula. Longtime casting director and co-executive producer Deena Katz says she weighs practical fit, each person’s personality and strengths, the professional dancers’ visibility, and the story a couple might create. The choices can also remain fluid while casting is still changing.
How do producers pair the dancers with the stars?
ABC describes Dancing With the Stars as a competition in which celebrities are paired with trained ballroom dancers to perform themed, choreographed routines judged by ballroom experts. The pairing itself, Katz has explained, begins taking shape as soon as a celebrity is cast: she starts thinking about which professional might suit that person.
That does not mean the show has disclosed a fixed compatibility formula. Katz and executive producer Conrad Green have described discussion, a grid and producers moving names and photographs around on a corkboard. They consider what the celebrity and dancer are like and where a partnership might go. The interviews do not provide a scoring rubric, factor weights or rules that determine every match.
What factors shape a pairing?
Practical fit: height and travel
Katz names height as one basic consideration. Travel matters, too: she considers a celebrity’s travel demands and whether a professional is suited to flying back and forth. These are practical factors within a broader editorial decision, not a complete checklist of requirements.

Personality, strengths and story potential
Producers also think about the personalities and strengths of both people and the story their partnership could tell. Katz described each combination as an open-ended possibility: “Each pairing is a potential story. You don’t know where it’s going to go, but you can have a feel for where it might go.”
The story is not simply about which celebrity might perform well. Katz says she tries to make each combination one she believes could reach the finals: “I try to make every single pairing a pairing that I think could make it to the finals.” That is her stated aim, not a published success rate or evidence that any pairing is guaranteed to advance.

Giving the professionals different stories
The professional dancers are part of the show’s appeal, and Katz says she wants audiences to see them in different kinds of partnerships rather than repeatedly matching one dancer with the same type of celebrity. As she put it: “Also, I would never want a dancer to always be with the football player because for the audience, our dancers are our stars and so you want to see them do something different and have a different story.” Variety in a pro’s role is therefore one of the considerations she has described.
Can a celebrity request a specific professional?
Yes, some celebrities have asked for particular partners. Katz says she has sometimes made the requested match and sometimes has not. In some cases, she has talked with the celebrity and asked them to trust her judgment. A request can be part of the conversation, but it does not decide the pairing on its own.

When do the professionals find out?
Pairings can remain unsettled while the cast is still coming together. Host Alfonso Ribeiro said that Season 34 pairings were changing in the weeks before the reveal as new contestants signed on, and that professionals may receive their assignments shortly before the cast announcement. That is an account of that season, not a guarantee of the timing every year.

The producer interviews support a picture of an iterative, considered process: practical logistics sit alongside creative judgment, attention to the professionals’ stories and the possibilities of each couple. They do not establish a universal compatibility formula or a public statistic linking a particular pairing choice to reaching the finals or winning. Katz’s ambition for every pairing is a goal, not a measured outcome.
