Its comparison with Armageddon is familiar, but the film’s distinctive focus is the human and civic response unfolding alongside the space mission.
What is Deep Impact about?
Young astronomers discover a comet headed toward Earth. As the countdown to impact begins, reporter Jenny pursues the story and is brought into contact with President Tom Beck. The government’s response includes a joint U.S.-Russian mission intended to divert the comet, while people face the private consequences of a possible catastrophe. Paramount’s synopsis emphasizes both large-scale excitement and human-scale storylines; the plot is not limited to the effort in space.

The screenplay is credited to Michael Tolkin and Bruce Joel Rubin. The principal cast named by Paramount includes Robert Duvall, Téa Leoni, Elijah Wood, Vanessa Redgrave, Maximilian Schell and Morgan Freeman. Amblin says executive producer Steven Spielberg selected Mimi Leder to direct and describes the casting as a way to draw attention to the characters at the center of the story.
Paramount Pictures’ official film page identifies Deep Impact as a 1998 film directed by Leder. Paramount Press Express’s plot synopsis outlines Jenny’s reporting, her encounter with Beck and the government’s planned mission.

How is Deep Impact different from Armageddon?
Both films arrived in 1998 and put a cosmic threat on a collision course with Earth, which is why they are often paired. But “the other asteroid movie” is shorthand for the comparison, not a precise description of Deep Impact: its official synopsis identifies the object as a comet.
| Comparison | Deep Impact | Armageddon |
|---|---|---|
| Tone | Critics have described it as comparatively somber or subdued. | Critics have contrasted it with a more exuberant action-spectacle approach. |
| Story emphasis | Reporting, public disclosure, government decisions, survival and private consequences share attention with the mission. | Comparisons tend to describe it as more centered on action and the mission. |
| Threat | Official material describes a comet on a collision course with Earth. | The cited comparisons discuss it as the other 1998 cosmic-disaster film; they do not establish a detailed scientific comparison of the threats. |
These are critical characterizations, not objective measures of realism or quality. TIME’s 2024 disaster-film feature contrasts Deep Impact’s comparatively somber, detailed approach with Armageddon’s exuberant spectacle. Space.com’s 2026 roundup likewise describes Deep Impact as more subdued and focused on survival and preparation, while associating Armageddon more with action. Neither comparison establishes that one film is scientifically more accurate.
Rank #2
The distinction matters because Deep Impact repeatedly returns to the consequences of a threat that has become public knowledge: who reports it, how authorities respond, and what individuals do with the time they have. That is the film’s particular angle on catastrophe, not simply a different style of space adventure.
