Daniel Day-Lewis’s Acting Retirement, Explained: Why He Returned in Anemone

Daniel Day-Lewis’s 2017 acting-retirement announcement was followed by a 2025 return in Anemone and a clarification: he meant to stop one kind of work, not retire from all work.

Daniel Day-Lewis did announce in 2017 that he would no longer work as an actor. But in 2025, he said he had not meant to retire from all work, and he returned to screen acting in Anemone, a film he made with his son Ronan Day-Lewis. The record supports describing him as private and uncomfortable with the public side of acting—not as someone whose current life is confirmed to be secluded.

Did Daniel Day-Lewis retire from acting?

In 2017, after Phantom Thread, a representative announced that Day-Lewis would no longer work as an actor. The statement described the decision as private and offered no further comment, as The Guardian reported in September 2025.

That announcement was real, but Day-Lewis later said the word “retire” had conveyed more than he intended. In a CBS News interview with Jane Pauley, dated October 5, 2025, he called the announcement a mistake and said: “At the time, I never intended to retire from anything. I chose to stop doing one kind of work so that I could perhaps concentrate on a different kind of work.”

Why did he return in Anemone?

Anemone marked Day-Lewis’s return to screen acting after Phantom Thread. He co-wrote the film with Ronan Day-Lewis, who directed it. In interviews, Day-Lewis described the chance to work with his son as part of what drew him back, rather than announcing a general return to a regular acting career. The Associated Press interview published October 1, 2025 discusses the collaboration and his reflections on the break.

The film’s story includes a man living in self-exile, but that is a fictional character, not evidence about Day-Lewis’s own circumstances. Ronan described the character’s isolation in his CBS interview; it should not be conflated with a claim that his father lives the same way.

What is known about his life away from acting?

Day-Lewis has spoken about finding the public dimension of fame difficult. In the AP interview, he said, “The public aspect of my life I’ve always been baffled by.” That supports a description of discomfort with attention, but it does not establish where he lives, what his daily routine is, or how secluded his present life may be.

He has also described other work during his acting pause. In the CBS interview, he discussed studying violin making in Boston and making three fiddles. That is one documented pursuit, not a complete account of his private years.

Nor was he wholly absent from public view after returning to film work: in October 2025 he discussed Anemone in interviews and appeared at the BFI London Film Festival. The BFI’s coverage of his October 17, 2025 screen talk records the event. When asked about his absence, he quipped, “I’m still alive!”

What the timeline establishes—and what it doesn’t

  • 2017: His representative announced that he would no longer work as an actor, without giving a public explanation.
  • During the break: Day-Lewis later discussed violin making as one form of work he pursued.
  • 2025: He returned to screen acting with Anemone, co-written with his son Ronan, and explained that he had not intended to retire from all work.

These points clarify the difference between the 2017 announcement, Day-Lewis’s later account of what he meant, and his concrete return in Anemone. They do not confirm a current plan to make more films, nor do they verify that he lives a secluded life.
