A physical altercation followed. Trejo later said he had heard someone warn that the balloon contained acid; other accounts described his attempt to reach the person who threw it. The precise exchange and the reason he exited remain disputed.
What happened at the parade
Trejo and his friend Mario Castillo were riding in a white vintage low-rider convertible when a water balloon hit the car, according to the Los Angeles Times’ July 5, 2024 report. Trejo got out and confronted people on the sidewalk. Video of the confrontation was also reported by CBS Los Angeles.
The parade had a designated section where spectators could use water balloons and Super Soakers. A parade sponsor told the Times that Trejo’s car was not in that section when it was hit.
Why did Trejo get out of the car?
Trejo gave FOX 11 one explanation: he said somebody yelled, “It’s acid,” and that he got out to look. He said a balloon then hit him and he saw the person throwing it. The FOX 11 interview presents Trejo’s account, not an independently verified finding about what was in the balloon or the exact sequence.
