Rob Liefeld says leaving Marvel was his choice, despite the publisher offering him other titles. In a May 21, 2026 first-person post, he pointed to difficulties working on Deadpool Team-Up and said his requests for preferred cover artists went unanswered. He also described his departure as the right decision and said he wanted to focus on his creator-owned work. Those are Liefeld’s accounts; Marvel’s intent behind the disputed events has not been established by the available reporting.
Why does Rob Liefeld say he left Marvel?
In a May 21, 2026 post, Liefeld said Marvel had offered him other titles for 2025 and beyond, but he chose to step away and pursue his creator-owned library. He described growing difficulty with the work on Deadpool Team-Up and said repeated requests for his preferred cover artists for the first issue went unanswered. He framed the departure as his decision, not as a dismissal by Marvel. Read Liefeld’s May 21, 2026 post.
That account establishes what Liefeld says about his choice and his experience; it does not independently confirm why his cover requests were not met or what Marvel intended. In an April 2025 interview, he also discussed the split, creator-owned rights, criticism of Marvel, and his return to Youngblood. Read the ComicBook.com interview.
How did the Deadpool & Wolverine premiere dispute figure into the split?
The premiere controversy is related background, but it is distinct from Liefeld’s later explanation about the comic work. In reporting published in February 2025, Liefeld said he and his family were not invited to the Deadpool & Wolverine afterparty and that he felt Kevin Feige did not acknowledge him. Those descriptions reflect Liefeld’s reported grievances; they do not establish that the omissions were deliberate.
