The Independent reported that a GoFundMe page described Roach’s illness as an aggressive squamous cell carcinoma affecting his head, neck and throat. That specific diagnosis was attributed to the fundraiser, not to the band’s announcement. The band publicly said only that he had battled cancer.
Who was David Roach?
Roach co-founded Junkyard in Los Angeles in 1987 and became its singer and songwriter. The band signed with Geffen Records in 1988 and released its self-titled debut album in 1989. The Independent’s account of his career notes the group split in 1992 after Geffen dropped it.

Junkyard later reunited and released High Water in 2017 and Old Habits Die Hard in 2019; the latter was originally recorded in 1992. Pollstar characterizes the band’s sound as a mix of punk, country and AC/DC-influenced rock, and identifies “Simple Man” as its most-streamed song without giving a platform, count or measurement date. Pollstar’s retrospective quotes guitarist and producer Tim Mosher describing Junkyard as “a pretty pure distillation” of the elements of the late-1980s East Hollywood scene.
