How Nicepool connected the film to the dispute
Deadpool & Wolverine premiered on July 26, 2024, and includes Nicepool, another version of Deadpool played by Reynolds. In its account of the parties’ pleaded allegations, a federal court described Nicepool as a caricature of a “woke” feminist: he makes an inappropriate comment about a woman’s body after childbirth, invokes his feminism to excuse it, and asks about an intimacy coordinator. The lines reported from the film by the Los Angeles Times include “Where in God’s name is the intimacy coordinator?” and “It’s OK, I identify as a feminist.” Los Angeles Times.
What Baldoni’s side alleged—and what remains unproven
Baldoni’s legal team argued that Nicepool referenced him. His lawyer, Bryan Freedman, pointed to the character’s hair bun, saying, “There’s no question it relates to Justin. I mean, anybody that watched that hair bun,” in an appearance on The Megyn Kelly Show, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. That was the lawyer’s interpretation, not a court’s determination. There was also an allegation separate from the character. In a complaint filed January 16, 2025, Baldoni and other plaintiffs alleged that Reynolds approached an executive at Baldoni’s agency, WME, during the film’s premiere and called Baldoni a “sexual predator,” then later demanded that the agency drop him. That is the plaintiffs’ account in their complaint, not an established fact in the cited record. Baldoni complaint.
Why Disney and Marvel received a preservation request
Variety reported that Baldoni’s legal team sent Disney and Marvel a litigation-hold letter asking them to preserve records related to Nicepool and other subjects. A litigation hold is a request to preserve potentially relevant material. It was not itself a lawsuit against Disney or Marvel, a court order, or proof that the character referred to Baldoni. Where the lawsuit stands
The dispute later moved beyond the dueling claims that first drew attention to Nicepool. The Associated Press reported that Lively and Baldoni settled in early May 2026, before a scheduled trial. AP also reported that the judge dismissed Baldoni and Wayfarer’s countersuit in June 2025 and later rejected Lively’s sexual-harassment claims on the ground that she was an independent contractor rather than an employee. In August 2026, the judge awarded Lively $363,245 in attorneys’ fees and $44,206 in costs.
