David Letterman said he went to Quentin Tarantino’s dressing room before a 2009 Late Show appearance and asked him to apologize for an earlier angry phone call. In Letterman’s later account, Tarantino initially refused, then apologized after his publicist intervened. The private exchange is known through Letterman’s recollection, not an independent recording or witness account.

Why Letterman said he wanted an apology

Letterman recounted the dispute during a 2020 appearance on Desus & Mero. The interview was the show’s season-two premiere on February 4, 2020, and Paramount+ identifies Letterman as the guest and notes the discussion of his beef with Tarantino: Paramount+ episode listing.

According to Letterman, the conflict began with a joke on Late Show about an earlier guest. He said Tarantino was upset because the guest was dating him at the time. Letterman recalled that Tarantino called and threatened to come to New York and hurt him. Letterman said he offered to pay for Tarantino’s flight, but Tarantino never came.

What Letterman said happened in the dressing room

Years later, Tarantino appeared on Late Show to promote his 2009 film Inglourious Basterds. Letterman said he went to Tarantino’s dressing room shortly before the broadcast and asked for an apology over the earlier call. Yahoo Entertainment’s account places the conversation about five minutes before the show began.

Letterman said Tarantino did not apologize at first. He recalled that Tarantino eventually did so after his publicist urged him to. Letterman also said they joked about the disagreement during the on-air interview. The available account does not establish that the full dressing-room conversation was shown on television. Yahoo’s report describes Letterman’s recollection: Yahoo Entertainment, February 7, 2020.

What is—and isn’t—confirmed

The apology story is Letterman’s account of a private conversation. The sources identifying the interview do not independently verify the alleged threat, the dressing-room exchange, or the apology. Yahoo reported that Tarantino did not immediately respond to its request for comment; that silence is neither confirmation nor denial.

  • Pulp Fiction - Blu-ray Brand New
  • The earlier guest remains unidentified. Yahoo said Letterman did not name her and that it could not immediately find video of the old appearance. A secondary report speculated about her identity, but that guess is not corroboration: Pajiba’s February 2020 account.
  • The phone call and apology should be attributed to Letterman. No independent witness account or recording of the private exchange is identified in the coverage.
  • The interview itself is identifiable. Paramount+ lists the extended Desus & Mero interview, but that listing establishes where Letterman told the story—not whether every detail of the private encounter happened as he recalled it.
