David Lee Roth returned to the public concert stage on May 3, 2025, with a 16-song set at the M3 Rock Festival in Columbia, Maryland. The set was built around Van Halen: it opened with “Panama,” ended with “Jump,” and included 15 Van Halen songs plus the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me.” The “first show in five years” description needs a qualification: Rolling Stone reported that Roth played a private Home Depot corporate event in 2023, so M3 was his first public concert in more than five years, not necessarily his first live appearance of any kind.
What happened at David Lee Roth’s M3 show?
Roth performed on the second night of the 2025 M3 Rock Festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. The Los Angeles Times reported that the set lasted 75 minutes. Louder counted 16 songs, with Van Halen material dominating the performance.
His previous public concert had been in March 2020, when he opened for KISS in Texas. That makes the M3 appearance a return to public concert performance after more than five years. The distinction matters because Rolling Stone reported that Roth also performed at a private Home Depot corporate gig in 2023.

What did Roth say about retirement?
At the M3 concert, Roth reportedly told the audience, “We’ve reached the end of my first retirement.” The line is reported by setlist.fm; the available source is a written account, not an independently verified transcript.
The comment came after a stop-start farewell period. Blabbermouth reports that Roth’s Las Vegas residency began on January 8, 2020, and that he canceled the remaining farewell shows in January 2022. In a February 2020 interview with the Star Tribune, as quoted by Blabbermouth, Roth said: “I’m calling it ‘The Last Tour’, and then underneath it in parentheses: ‘Unless It Isn’t’. … At my age, everything is a possible farewell tour.”
