The evidence cited for David Beckham’s 2003 move to Real Madrid does not establish that he and his father, Ted, had a five-year feud. Contemporary reports show Ted hoped David would stay at Manchester United and later expressed deep sadness about the departure. They do not document a father-son estrangement lasting five years or show that the transfer caused one.
What Ted Beckham said before David left Manchester United
In April 2003, while speculation about a transfer was mounting, Ted Beckham told The Guardian he believed his son wanted to remain at Old Trafford: “I am convinced he doesn’t want to leave Manchester United – it would break his heart if he did go.” The remark records Ted’s view during the transfer speculation, not David’s confirmed intentions.
In June, Ted again emphasized his son’s connection to the club. The Guardian reported him saying: “He is Manchester United through and through.” These comments support the picture of a father who thought his son was devoted to United and hoped he would stay.
What Ted said after the move to Real Madrid
David Beckham left Manchester United for Real Madrid in 2003. Afterward, Spanish sports newspaper AS reported Ted saying he felt “como si hubiera perdido un hijo” (“as if I had lost a son”). AS also reported that Ted connected the departure in part to David’s relationship with manager Sir Alex Ferguson. That is Ted’s reported interpretation; it does not establish the full reasons for the transfer or prove that David and his father fell out.

Keep the father-son story separate from the Ferguson fallout
Accounts of Beckham’s departure often discuss his strained relationship with Ferguson, but that is a separate relationship from the one between David and Ted. The Associated Press’s 2023 coverage of the Beckham documentary discusses Beckham’s upbringing and his father’s role in the shared ambition for David to play for Manchester United, as well as the Ferguson fallout and move to Madrid. It does not substantiate a five-year estrangement between father and son.
What David Beckham said about the transfer
In June 2003, Beckham said Manchester United could have handled his transfer better. Contemporary ABC News reporting said he denied initiating the move and wanted to put the acrimony around it behind him. Those public comments concern the transfer and its handling; they are not evidence of a feud with his father.

Is the “five-year feud” claim established?
No. The cited contemporary reports establish that Ted publicly hoped David would stay and later described feeling as though he had lost a son. The AP’s later account supplies family and documentary context, but none of these sources gives dates for a father-son rift, describes its duration, or confirms a reconciliation after five years. The specific duration and causal claim in the headline should therefore be treated as unverified, not as a documented fact.
