No: David Spade was not attacked while filming Joe Dirt. Police-attributed news reports placed the 2000 stun-gun assault at his Beverly Hills home, not on a film set. Police said Spade was not seriously injured, so the claim that his life nearly ended is not supported by the reported medical facts.
Where and when the attack happened
ABC News reported on December 4, 2000, citing police, that Spade’s personal assistant, David Warren Malloy, allegedly attacked him with a stun gun during an attempted burglary at Spade’s Beverly Hills home. Police said there was a struggle, Spade got away and called 911. He refused transport to a hospital and received treatment at the scene for minor injuries. Police said he was not seriously injured. ABC News, December 4, 2000
The location matters: the contemporary report put the assault at Spade’s home, not during production of Joe Dirt. The Las Vegas Sun mentioned the incident in a December 30, 2000 profile while describing Joe Dirt as an upcoming film expected in March. The overlap in timing helps explain why the attack and the movie have been linked in later retellings; it does not establish that the assault happened on set. Las Vegas Sun, December 30, 2000
How Spade later described the assault
In a 2011 interview with Howard Stern, Spade recalled waking at around 5 a.m. and finding his attacker in the house. “And he’s just standing there and started hitting me,” he said. Spade told Stern he grabbed a shotgun, could not find the attacker, and locked himself in a bathroom: “I got scared because I couldn’t find him so I locked myself in the bathroom.” Howard Stern Show, October 19, 2011

Those details are Spade’s later personal recollection. The police-attributed account reported by ABC News independently described a stun-gun assault, a struggle, Spade’s escape and his call to 911. Keep the accounts distinct rather than treating every detail in the interview as a police finding.
What happened to the attacker
The Los Angeles Times reported that Malloy pleaded guilty in April 2001 to assaulting Spade with a stun gun and apologized. The court ordered five years’ probation, a 100-yard stay-away order and $200 restitution. Malloy’s lawyer said he had been angry and in a cocaine-induced psychotic state; that was the lawyer’s explanation, not an independently established clinical finding.
