Cassidy later said he agreed to the shoot and was angry at the commercial interests built around his teen-idol image. The cover photograph was cropped; it should not be described as an uncropped, explicit nude image.
Where the photograph appeared
The image appeared in Rolling Stone issue 108, dated May 11, 1972, as part of the feature “Naked Lunch Box.” The David Cassidy archive lists the issue and cover story, and its cover scan credits Annie Leibovitz as photographer: David Cassidy archive. The magazine cover archive also records the issue and photographer credit: Rolling Stone cover archive.
A historical account describes the cover portrait as Cassidy nude on grass and says an inside gatefold was more revealing. That is a secondary description; the reproduced cover was cropped, and those accounts do not establish that the cover itself showed full, uncropped nudity. The original issue and its image rights have not been independently verified here.
Why Cassidy agreed to pose
Cassidy’s public identity was closely associated with Keith Partridge on The Partridge Family and the wholesome teen-idol market around the show. In the Rolling Stone interview material reproduced by the Cassidy archive, he described his anger at the people profiting from his persona: “I pissed off everybody that was really profiting from the business of David Cassidy.” The archive presents this as Cassidy speaking about the shoot and its commercial context: David Cassidy archive.

A later retrospective account quotes Cassidy saying the feature’s intent was, as he understood it, to make him look “not so squeaky clean”: “So they came with me that weekend. I played the Garden and I played another gig. What they did was something that made me – what the intent was I think was to not make me look so squeaky clean.” This is a later recollection, not proof that every participant shared the same motive: David Cassidy archive.
How the feature challenged his teen-idol image
“Naked Lunch Box” played on the contrast between the marketed image of Cassidy and the merchandise associated with it, including lunchboxes. The feature was an editorial intervention in that wholesome persona, but the available accounts do not show that this photograph alone changed his career or produced a measurable sales or commercial effect.

- Cassidy’s stated view: he said he posed willingly and connected his decision to frustration with the commercial business surrounding his image.
- Not established: the sources do not quantify any effect on sales, readership, circulation, or Cassidy’s career, nor do they show that one motive explains everyone involved.
