David Arquette said in 2023 that he felt inferior to Courteney Cox during the height of her Friends success. What David Arquette said about feeling inferior
In an April 2023 interview on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, Andy Cohen asked Arquette whether Cox’s success on Friends had made him feel inferior while they were together. Arquette replied, “Yeah, absolutely. It’s difficult.” Entertainment Tonight’s April 28, 2023 account of the interview reports that Arquette connected the feeling to comparing himself with someone at the top of television and to traditional expectations he carried about providing, paying the check, and being the breadwinner. He described that comparison as difficult, saying “it’s kinda hard to put yourself there.”
Arquette also recalled “a lot of pain,” arguments, and ego early in the relationship. Those are his retrospective descriptions, not an independent finding that Cox’s fame caused the couple’s problems or ended their marriage. He said that working through his feelings involved building confidence, focusing on himself, and understanding his own happiness, needs, and boundaries.
What the couple said when they separated
Arquette and Cox met while filming the first Scream, married in 1999, and welcomed their daughter, Coco, in 2004, according to Entertainment Tonight’s 2023 report. On October 12, 2010, they announced a trial separation. Their joint statement, quoted by ABC News that day, said: “The reason for this separation is to better understand ourselves and the qualities we need in a partner and for our marriage.” The statement also said they remained best friends and responsible parents and still loved one another deeply.

That contemporaneous explanation matters: the couple described a mutual effort to understand their relationship, not a split attributed solely to Cox’s career or Arquette’s feelings of inferiority. Arquette’s own interview with Howard Stern in October 2010 offered his individual perspective on intimacy and communication; the official Howard Stern Show rundown also reported that Arquette said he had not called for the separation. His remarks should not be substituted for the couple’s joint statement.

The trial separation was not yet a finalized divorce. The couple filed for divorce in 2012, and the divorce was finalized in 2013, according to Entertainment Tonight. In a separate ABC News interview published October 2, 2013, Arquette said they had tried to avoid a fight and remain supportive and connected. He described Cox as one of his closest friends: “I still obviously feel so blessed that I met her and that we have a child together and that she’s in my life. She’s still one of my closest, greatest friends.” ABC News reported those comments.

In the 2023 interview, Arquette likewise said the two had managed their breakup well and encouraged separated parents to try to preserve a healthy relationship for their child. His account of feeling diminished by comparisons during Cox’s peak television success is one part of the story; the couple’s 2010 statement and their later efforts to stay connected provide essential context.
