The dance offers a rare chance to be together, but the film’s deeper subject is the family separation that surrounds it—and continues after the reunion. Co-directed by Natalie Rae and Angela Patton, the feature documentary is available on Netflix, according to the film’s official website.
What is Daughters about?
The film follows Aubrey, Santana, Raziah, and Ja’Ana as they prepare for a father-daughter dance with their fathers, who are incarcerated at a Washington, D.C., jail. The event creates an opportunity for conversation, touch, and time together that ordinary virtual visits cannot provide. Netflix’s official synopsis describes the girls’ aspirations and dreams alongside the emotional toll of their fathers’ absence.

The dance is a focal point, not a neat resolution. The film situates this reunion within a longer experience of separation and family connection shaped by the criminal justice system. It keeps the girls’ lives and perspectives at the center rather than treating the event as proof that incarceration’s effects have been overcome.
Is Daughters a true story?
Daughters is a feature documentary about real participants and the father-daughter dance program shown in the film. Netflix describes it as an eight-year documentary journey. Its synopsis and the filmmakers’ accounts frame the story around the girls, their fathers, and the experience of preparing for the dance; the available official descriptions do not establish further details about consent procedures or whether any scenes were reconstructed.

Who made the film, and how did the project begin?
Natalie Rae and Angela Patton co-directed Daughters. Patton began organizing Date with Dad dances in 2008 through Girls For A Change. Rae encountered Patton’s TED talk, and the two developed the documentary together, according to Netflix Tudum’s filmmaker feature.
Tudum also describes an observational approach: the filmmakers began with verité footage and no voice-over, then shaped the story through the footage. That choice fits a film whose central experience is what the girls and their fathers share, and what the reunion cannot settle.
Where can you watch Daughters?
The official film website says Daughters is available globally on Netflix. Catalogs can vary by country and change, so check the title page in your local Netflix service for current availability.
Netflix announced it had acquired the documentary on January 31, 2024, in its acquisition announcement.

How was Daughters received at Sundance?
Daughters premiered in the U.S. Documentary Competition at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival on January 22. Sundance’s profile of co-directors Rae and Patton reports that the film received the U.S. Documentary Audience Award and the Festival Favorite Award.
A Sundance article about the film says an end-of-film message reported that 95 percent of the men who participated in the program had not returned to prison. That figure is presented here as a message reported at the film’s end, not as an independently verified program outcome: the article does not provide the cohort size, follow-up period, definition of “returned,” or evidence that the program caused the result.
