In April 2015, Danganronpa writer Kazutaka Kodaka said he had no specific direction mapped out for the series’ next main entry. What he did want was to keep surprising players and retain the freedom to make the game he wanted. Those remarks were possibilities and intentions at the time—not a current announcement. A later project, Danganronpa 2×2, has a more concrete premise: it retells Danganronpa 2 with an alternative storyline called Slayhem.
Did Kodaka already know where Danganronpa was going next?
No. In a Game Informer interview published April 2, 2015, Kodaka said, “I don’t have a specific idea of where I’m going to go from here, but I do know I’m going to do what I want to do.” He described a creative direction, not a settled plot, setting, or release plan.

In that interview, Kodaka also said he was not concentrating on broadening the series’ appeal or expanding its fanbase. That was his stated perspective in 2015; it should not be read as a description of the franchise’s current business strategy. Read the April 2, 2015 Game Informer interview.
What did he want the next game to preserve?
Kodaka’s clearest commitment was to the experience of uncertainty. “One thing that won’t change is that idea of surprising players, keeping them really on their toes, and wondering what’s going to happen next,” he told Game Informer on April 2, 2015.

He framed surprise as a guiding principle, not a promise about any particular twist or returning character. The aim was to make players question what would happen next while allowing him to follow his own creative instincts.
What story settings was he considering?
In a separate Siliconera interview published March 24, 2015, Kodaka discussed several possible directions for a future entry: a story set in the past, one between established events, or a science-fiction future. He had not selected among them, and said his mind could change. These were exploratory concepts, not confirmed plans.

- This latest installment features an all-new storyline built on the foundation of "Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair". The original setting and cast of characters are back, but a single incident leads to an entirely new set of victims, culprits, and tricks.
- The new scenario offers the same volume of content as the original, delivering a complete and immersive experience.
- Also included is the original "Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair" scenario, adapted to modern platforms with updated visuals and refined presentation.
The setting mattered because it could shape both the protagonist and the mysteries available to the story. A more speculative future, for example, could make different murder methods possible through its technology. The interview did not establish which option would become a game. How did Kodaka build a Danganronpa plot?
In the same Siliconera interview, Kodaka described starting with a list of story points and intended surprises, then reviewing the sequence from the player’s perspective. He would ask whether the events felt interesting or surprising and revise, repeating the process several times. He summed up his approach by saying, “My writing process is kind of spur of the moment.”

- About Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc: Enter Hope's Peak Academy, a prestigious high school reserved for the nation's "ultimate" students. Things take a twisted turn when Monokuma, a maniacal bear, takes them all prisoner in his deadly game of despair
- About Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair: With a brand new cast of Ultimates mysteriously trapped on Jabberwock Island in their own life-or-death game, having fun in the sun with this twisted teddy requires more than just a bit of wit to survive
- About Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony: Set in a "psycho-cool" environment, a new cast of 16 characters find themselves kidnapped and imprisoned in a school. Inside, some will kill, some will die, and some will be punished. Reimagine what you thought high-stake, fast-paced investigation was as you investigate twisted murder cases, and condemn your new friends to death
The description suggests a process that balances planned turning points with repeated audience-perspective checks. It does not mean the story was made without structure: the list of points provided a framework, while rereading helped him judge how those points would land.
What is the current context for the series’ next story?
An August 3, 2026 Clash Anime interview with Kodaka and producer Shohei Sakakibara describes Danganronpa 2×2 as a retelling of Danganronpa 2 with a new alternative storyline called Slayhem. That is a concrete project premise, distinct from Kodaka’s undecided possibilities discussed in 2015. The interview does not establish a release date, platforms, or whether a physical edition will be available. Read the August 3, 2026 Clash Anime interview.

How did Kodaka describe the link between story and gameplay?
In a March 11, 2015 PlayStation.Blog interview about the spin-off Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls, Kodaka said, “Obviously the main focus of a Danganronpa game is its story.” He also described looking for gameplay elements that could express and advance that story. This is a separate interview about a spin-off, but it helps explain why his comments about plot and player surprise sit at the center of his creative approach. In a Game Informer interview published April 3, 2015, Kodaka said he chose Junko as the villain because he saw her as an especially powerful character, and wanted to pair her with a computer program that could persist and grow in influence. He also explained that the returning survivors’ role in Danganronpa 2 was not originally conceived as a delayed reveal. He first considered a self-contained new story, then developed the idea of having survivors help the new cast. Read the April 3, 2015 Game Informer spoiler interview.
